I think I've decided not to get a changing table. I'm going to be doing cloth diapering and there is a LARGE counter, opposite the toilet and sink area in my hall bathroom... tons of space for baby with cupboards above and drawers below to hold diapers, wipes, et cetera.
I'll kind of miss the idea of how cute a changing table looks but think the bathroom just makes more sense for changing.
Anyone else plan on using something other than a standard changing table for diaper changes?
Re: Anyone Not Getting a Changing Table?
Yes save your money and buy something else. I did not buy one with my 1st and it worked out just fine. We just layed her in her crib and put a big changing pad underneath her and changed her diapers there. It was so easy! We still do it like that and she is 18 months
Well, we'll start out without it - if I find that it seems it would be better, I'll pick one up. The counter, though is literally... 3 1/2' deep.
Honestly, I always thought it was a weird little counter to have in there... then suddenly, a lightbulb went off.
We are not, for the reason Breezie gives... going upstairs to change a diaper. We figure that a pad/blanket/towel downstairs on the couch/floor will likely be where many of the daytime changes happen.
We have a low-profile dresser from Ikea that's perfect height to add a changing pad on top for nursery changes.
Will your dad build me one and ship it to Indiana??!!
You are too funny! I asked him if he was planning to start making cribs/dressers, but he said that he would have to charge way more than you can buy them for in the store (since it will be solid oak, handmade, etc the labor is high). Be sure to check out my fb page for pics to come!
I'll probably do this too. I think a whole separate changing table is a huge waste of space and money!
Our spacing is cramped so we won't have room for a table and dresser and crib so I am hoping for a dresser with a mattress for the changing table on top. I've seen them when shopping with BFF when she was pregnant.

We didn't get a changing table with our first baby and still don't regret it. We do however have a PNP set up with the changing table still in use and that's what we use. Now that LO is 10 months we have to use the straps because he's always on the go. We CD as well and I will say the straps are VERY useful when I have to flush the poop. So I'm assuming your going to get one of the contour pads for the countertop, I would see if they have straps. If this is your first baby- I would HIGHLY recommend cloth wipes too- its makes it so much easier. For some reason we waited a few months to use cloth wipes and when we switched I dont know why we waited so long.
We're inheriting one of these that I'll keep downstairs to change the baby on... upstairs we'll just use the crib.

I, too, am against getting tons of new furniture... esp. pieces that aren't very usefull past the baby stage. (We're only having one and the rest of the family is done too, so there's no future use plans, and it'll be a gigantic waste..)
