Anyone Not Getting a Changing Table?

I think I've decided not to get a changing table.  I'm going to be doing cloth diapering and there is a LARGE counter, opposite the toilet and sink area in my hall bathroom... tons of space for baby with cupboards above and drawers below to hold diapers, wipes, et cetera.

I'll kind of miss the idea of how cute a changing table looks but think the bathroom just makes more sense for changing.

Anyone else plan on using something other than a standard changing table for diaper changes?

  • remember though...your baby is going to be rolling sooner than later. i at first thought i wouldn't ever need/use the changing table, and that i would change him on the floor with a pad. the changing table has come in soooooooooooooooo handy and i have used it more than i ever thought i would!
  •    Yes save your money and buy something else. I did not buy one with my 1st and it worked out just fine. We just layed her in her crib and put a big changing pad underneath her and changed her diapers there. It was so easy! We still do it like that and she is 18 months

Well, we'll start out without it - if I find that it seems it would be better, I'll pick one up.  The counter, though is literally... 3 1/2' deep.

Honestly, I always thought it was a weird little counter to have in there... then suddenly, a lightbulb went off.

  • We had a dresser that you could snap the the changing pad on to (just put the snaps on the back and then snapped the pad into them).  We NEVER used it.  I am serious.  We always changed her on our laps, until she was 2.  Although she is tiny, haha.  We would lay down a towel and change her on the couch, etc.  I found it really inconvenient to go up to her room everytime we needed to change her diaper, which is OFTEN with a newborn.  We just never got in the routine of using it.
  • We are not, for the reason Breezie gives... going upstairs to change a diaper. We figure that a pad/blanket/towel downstairs on the couch/floor will likely be where many of the daytime changes happen.

We have a low-profile dresser from Ikea that's perfect height to add a changing pad on top for nursery changes.

  • My dad is building us a dresser with a hutch that will have adequate room for a changing pad. I don't see the sense in buying a specific changing table that you have absolutely no use for later. Just my two cents.

Will your dad build me one and ship it to Indiana??!!

You are too funny! I asked him if he was planning to start making cribs/dressers, but he said that he would have to charge way more than you can buy them for in the store (since it will be solid oak, handmade, etc the labor is high). Be sure to check out my fb page for pics to come!

  • I think that is a great idea. You can always get a changing pad and put it on the counter. I cloth diaper and I think it will DEFINATELY make your life easier changing diapers in the bathroom. I wish our house was set up like that. Good Idea!
  • I'm planning on buying a changing table/dresser combo - the kind with the rails that hold the pad in place that you can take off later and just use the dresser.

I'll probably do this too. I think a whole separate changing table is a huge waste of space and money!

  • Also - our main reason for getting one is that we have 2 cats and a dog so changing on the floor isn't really an option. We need to be able to do it in a room where we can close the door to keep the animals out if they get in the way (all 3 of them like to get right in your face).
  • We didn't get one right away with DS because we thought that we would just use the couch and then floor and then bed, etc.  After a couple months we broke down and my IL's bought us a great one that we picked out from ToysRus.  It is really solid, not crappy like the cheap ones.  DS is now 2 1/2 and I don't know what we would do without it.  It is so much easier to change him on there.  He doesn't roll around as much as he did when on the floor.  It has just made changing his diaper a lot easier for us.

  • Our spacing is cramped so we won't have room for a table and dresser and crib so I am hoping for a dresser with a mattress for the changing table on top. I've seen them when shopping with BFF when she was pregnant.

  • I think they're a waste (what do you do with it when the kid is out of diapers?) ?We have a changing pad on DS's dresser top, it works really well. ?And when it comes time to worry about rolling, most people move to the floor.

  • We bought a changing table for our DS and never used it. We mostly changed him on the floor or on the bed. We are now trying to sell our changing table at our upcoming garage sale- trying to recouperate some of the wasted money! Everyone is different but I would say they are a waste of money.
  • We didn't get a changing table with our first baby and still don't regret it.  We do however have a PNP set up with the changing table still in use and that's what we use.  Now that LO is 10 months we have to use the straps because he's always on the go.  We CD as well and I will say the straps are VERY useful when I have to flush the poop.  So I'm assuming your going to get one of the contour pads for the countertop, I would see if they have straps.  If this is your first baby- I would HIGHLY recommend cloth wipes too- its makes it so much easier.  For some reason we waited a few months to use cloth wipes and when we switched I dont know why we waited so long.

  • We have a low dresser we are going to use as the changing table.  I plan on buying the foam pad to use on top.
  • Your plan sounds good, just get something to help hold them in place and you are all set!
  • We're inheriting one of these that I'll keep downstairs to change the baby on...  upstairs we'll just use the crib.

I, too, am against getting tons of new furniture... esp. pieces that aren't very usefull past the baby stage. (We're only having one and the rest of the family is done too, so there's no future use plans, and it'll be a gigantic waste..)

  • I don't have any other ideas yet, but i think the changing table is a little silly, alot of the one's i've seen don't seem sturdy, and it makes me nervous that the baby will fall when heavier...decisions,decisions

  • we're planning on doing a contoured pad on top of a dresser. we're getting out furniture from burlington coat factory probably, and they don't really have many changing tables, they have lots of the dressers with pads though
