breath-holding spells

Hi,

Does anybody else have a breath-holder? If so, have you found any successful techniques for getting your little one to breath in during them?

My 15 month old holds her breath when she gets upset. She turns blue and occasionally passes out. When she was a bit younger we could blow really hard in her face and it would make her breath in, but that no longer works. I know that breath-holding spells are not harmful, but they sure are scary...for us and for her. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: breath-holding spells

  • DD does this all the time. It freaks me and my DH out! The only trick that works for us is to blow hard in her face. My mom told me that I use to to do the same thing, and she would have to splash water in my face. A bit extreme I think, but whatever works!

  • My brother did this.  He did it till well past 5 years old.  Because of that he did not get all his kindergarden shots.  I don't know why but mom said it was because of that.  Keep that in mind and keep telling the doctor if she keeps doing it.

As for what works.  DD does the same thing.  Blowing in her face doesn't work but sometimes tickling the bottome of her food does work.  (You know where you lightly run your fingernail on the bottom of their foot.).  Other than that I have nothing.

  • DS does this too. I usually rub his back briskly and/or rub his feet.  The pedi. told me he would outgrow this.  It's pretty freaky.
