Any moms of left handed children

Well I can pretty much tell that my son will be left handed (although he does use his right some of the time).  If you have a left handed child, did this pose any problems?  My son is still having trouble using utensils on a regular basis and holding a crayon, even though we always practice (he is on track for his other age developments).  Also, where did you find scissors appropriate for a 2 year old?  Is left handedness genetic--we're not sure where he gets it from since we are right-handed.  Please share your thoughts or stories.  Thanks

  • DS is a leftie.  I noticed it when he was pretty young, like 18 months he was using his left primarily to eat with.  Now he draws pictures and writes letters and words with his left hand.  He has no problem with it, actually has very advanced writing skills.

He doesn't do scissors yet, but I'm sure I've seen left handed scissors at teacher's stores.

I was told that it is genetic, my grandpa is the only left handed person that I know of on both sides of the family (incidentally DS is named after him, weird huh?)

  • i can tell that Carson is probably going to be left handed.  i am left handed, so was my grandpa, and dh's cousin.  everyone else in the family is right handed.  he will chuck the ball far with his left hand, with his right hand he will throw the ball almost straight in the air.  he uses his left hand to eat with and draw with most of the time but sometimes uses his right too.  i have seen Carson use utensils so i know he can do it but i am not stressed aboiut him using utensils all the time.  i never had any issues being left handed.  not sure about scissors but they should be easy to find.

  • I believe kids scissors are both left and right interchangeable. I  am left handed but my son is right handed. It never posed a problem for me other than I have messier handwriting. I could also never use those EraserMate pens in school because my hand would erase as I wrote.
  • DD is a leftie, just like DH, so fortunately he'll be able to help her navigate through left-handedness ;) Seriously though, I know that some things are a pain, like how the PP mentioned writing with a pen- DH has always been annoyed that his writing gets smeared if he's using a nice ink pen. DD hasn't had any troubles at all and uses her utensils just fine. We're not using scissors at this point, but I taught kindergarten for a year and it wasn't that bad for kids who were lefties- they were all collectively developing their motor skills.

    This exactly:)

  • DD appears that she is gonna be a lefty.  Funny that you mention it, b/c she has some trouble with utensils too. She has the concept down, but has trouble with the scooping motion. I never thought it could be related to her being a lefty.  hmmmmm..
