High-Risk Pregnancy

Type 1 Diabetics out there?

After the birth of my son, last year, my immune system went haywire and I developed Type 1 diabetes at the age of 32...BAM!  Out of nowhere!  We got the clear from my team of Dr's to "try" again, and I am almost 6 mos pregnant again...and this has by far, been the hardest thing I've ever done!

Is there anyone else out there that knows the ups and downs of being a pre-existing diabetic and trying to do everything perfectly for the sake of the unborn baby??  I feel so alone sometimes, no one around me has any idea how hard this is!!!!

Re: Type 1 Diabetics out there?

  • DM1 here too - what has been so hard? Are you on MDI or a pump? I pump Novolog since the end of 2008, +HPT 4/12/2009 and EDD 12/19/2009.

It's been a PITA to go to the Endo every 2w plus OB every 4w. 1st tri my sugars skyrocketed and it took time to adust my insulin to match, and I still adjust at least 1x/mo, but that is why I see the endo so much, ya know? 2nd tri so far has been way easier.

The diet has been easy, not much adjustment, I basically eat smaller, more frequent meals and avoid fruit/dairy/juice/cereal in the morning along with all the other PG eating drama.

It sucks because DM to DM or PG to PG, things are still different. Of course it is all worth it, but that doesn't make it easier!!

  • Me!  I'm Type 1 since 2004 and using the pump.  I agree, it is hard sometimes to keep everything adjusted.  We just have to try our hardest.  I'm in the 1st tri now and around week 5 my sugars skyrocketed, now they are plummeting but I'm making adjusting weekly almost to keep up with things.  My last A1C was ok, but this next one should be around or under 6%.  I get frustrated a lot, so if you need to vent just send me a message!!!!!  There aren't many T1's out here, so we are kind of in a league of our own.  Happy and Healthy 9 months to you!!!Big Smile
  • I have had type 1 since Dec 2004.  I am not currently pregnant, but we are just starting to ttc #2.  I know what you mean about feeling alone sometimes.  It is difficult having to manage your diabetes and a pregnancy at the same time!  There are a couple of type 1's on this board, feel free to vent here when you need to!
  • Hi, just wanted to throw my support out there too!  I've been type 1 since I was 14 and just had my first child last October.  The best advice I can give is test, test, test - it gets so old, but that's the only way to stay on top of your fluctuating insulin needs.  And be very careful after the baby arrives - I was down to almost no insulin at all and sometimes that was too much.  My endo said that was common after birth.  Good luck with everything!

  • I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have been on the pump for approx. 5 years.  I am actually taking my last BCP today!  Soooo exicted about that, but sooo nervous at the same time.  I am trying really  hard to do the right thing with my BG levels, but they are up and down.  I am scheduled to see my endo at the end of September so hopefully she can give me some insight.  I have the worst time with my morning numbers.

I have read up so much on diabetic pregnancies that I have myself scared.

  • I'm 30 and was diagnosed as Type 1 when I was 18. I've had one miscarriage, one baby, and am pregnant again (for the last time...I hope.) It certainly is a different pregnancy experience than others have talked about...weekly appointments from 6-8 weeks on. More ultrasound tests than anyone could possibly imagine (1 a week for 6 weeks now) and more to worry about than most Mommies. What killed me for my pregnancy with dd was being told from 5 months on that high blood sugars can cause my baby to die...and that really didn't help my stress levels, or my blood pressure. If it wasn't for the Puppps, the blood sugar problems (I became extremely insulin resistant toward 30 weeks on...) and the pre-e, I would have said the stress of the doctor appointments made wanting to have kids a major no-no.

Now I'm having an easier pregnancy (although i'm battling low blood sugars instead of high) and trying to keep up with my toddler and still work are making this interesting. Don't feel alone...we're out here...and it's a rough road, but sometimes it makes you appreciate the end result more because of the struggle to get it. You know?
