Coming home outfit - stupid question

Aren't there certain types of clothes that you are supposed to dress a newborn in so that it does not irritate the umbilical cord (and that are generally just better for newborns)?  What are you supposed to look for/avoid?   I see lots of posts about coming home outfits that seem to be all over the board so Im clueless.

  • i think some people prefer a kimono style shirt to not rub against the umbilical cord, but we just dressed dd in onesies from the start and she was never in pain and we never had a problem. i think any harsh fabric would suck against their skin, but plain old cotton onesies are cute and worked fine for us. i have always used fabric softener though... • My SIL and brother just bought their son home in a regular outfit. He didn't have a onsie on under it though, he had one of those buttoned undershirts on, they were told that helps with the cord (?). But again, the outfit was a basic little newborn outfit.

You're not supposed to use fabric softener on baby clothes. It's just extra chemicals against their skin and it degrades the fire retardancy of the clothes.
