2nd Trimester

well my OB just called back re: swine flu

to add another to the billion swine flu posts...

and totally reversed what he told me at my appt two days ago.  he said when the vaccine comes in, i'll be getting it.  i am in shock.  he is anti-flu vaccine for the regular flu.  gave me a big speech about why it wasn't a big deal.  and now this.

he said he'd be doing more research and reading the studies but chances are when they get the shots in he'll be calling me up to get one.  ugh... okay, i'm back to being worried.

Re: well my OB just called back re: swine flu

  • i would do your own research. in all honestly, it sounds like his drug rep for the vaccine just bought him lunch.

  • He just told you that you will be getting one?  If you aren't comfortable with it, tell him no.  If you want it, fine, but if you don't, he can't force it on you.  I'm not planning on getting it.  I don't trust anything that new, especially with a baby growing inside me.

  • I was against getting the regular flu vaccine that has been around for years and tested, so I am really not going to get the swine flu vaccine.

BTW, every time I see the pic of your DD in your siggy, it makes me want spagetti.

  • Just remember - your body, you baby, you don't HAVE to do anything.

I'm going to ask my MW at my next appt what she thinks.  It's funny b/c with my son I delivered mid-Nov and no one told me to get the flu vaccine.  It wasn't until after I delivered my son that it was offered to me.

  • oh i have about a million questions for him. i am not taking this lightly.  i am just worried again.  he's pretty anti-vaccine, anti- almost every kind of drug for pg women, so i'm surprised.  but he's doing his due diligence in checking the research and getting as much info as he can.  and i know him well enough that if he has reservations he'll share them with me.

Unlikely that this would cause a reversal in opinion.

Pregnant women are at the top of the priority list for this vaccine.  There is a reason for it, and it's got less to do with money than it does to do with public health.

I was a drug rep for 5 years. This is where the majority of doctors get the vast majority of their information & updates on new drugs. We also would provide them with the latest studies for their review. Im not saying there isnt a reason for it or reserach, Im just suggesting you do your own as well since Ive seen WAY too many doctors persuaded into using a drug by a nice meal or trip. Also alot of reps arent giving them what I would call the "full story" on stuff.

yeah, i don't know how many ways i can say this... but my doctor is ANTI-vaccines and most drugs.

so while i understand how drug rep/dr relationships work (i worked in a dr office for years)  he's not calling me up because he got a free lunch.

they don't even have the vaccine in their office, or know when they are getting it.  and the pressure to give it to pg women isn't coming from the drug company.

I am well aware of how updates on drugs get disseminated (I worked in medical offices... and have often been on the receiving end of a drug rep's speil).

I am pretty sure that the CDC and NIH and the bodies that are the ones recommending the shot are not as easily swayed by sweet-talking reps with good expense accounts.

  • I saw my OB this morning and he recommends the flu shot and the swine flu shot. He said as a pregnant woman I'm more susceptible and also becasue I work in a school.

    Right.  This is absolutely correct!

...and I see a lot of people mention the swine flu vaccine issues from the 70s.  But there's been a lot of developments in vaccine development since the 70s, so those old problems should barely even register as a blip on the radar.

  • World Health Organization recommends it too.  I don't know what I'm going to do but I like to look outside the US for recommendations as well.  $$ speaks - it's happened before and it'll happen again.

    Tongue Tied

What about the experts at CDC and the WHO who are the ones recommending pg women get this first?  Are they secretly in bed with pharma reps?

    LOL, I agree!

  • Oops, just read all the posts now.  I should always read all posts before I post. lol
  • You made me want In-n_out! and a shake!
  • I'll go with what my OB says.  But really...it's just a different strain of the flu.  That you could get with or without a vac.  The way people were talking on the boards I thought I missed some major swine flu outbreak that was targeting pg women.

Ummm... the "regular" flu vaccine is different every year. They develop a new flu vaccine each year for the type of flu they believe will be most prevalent. So yes, the flu vaccine has been around for years, but each year it is a different vaccine and has to be tested each year. The swine flu vaccine is really no different in that regard. I usually do get a flu vaccine, and if my MW reccomends the swine flu vaccine, I will get it. I'd really rather not get sick and I'd really prefer to pass any immunity from the shot onto my baby.

  • One of my baby's "grandparents" is a really experienced/respected infectious disease doctor and he strongly recommended me to get both the regular flu shot and the swine flu shot.

Mentioning In N Out when I'm two thousand miles away was just low. You could only get lower if you mentioned Tommy's.
