Toddlers: 24 Months+

sippy cups....

Hey ladies!  I'm mostly on the 0-6 month board but I have a question about my older son.  He just turned 3 and loooovvveeess his sippy cup.  We weaned the bottle when he turned one and he was totally fine with it.  Now I don't know what to do because he's so not willing to give up the sippy.   I'm just wondering when you guys took it away....He drinks fine from a cup, so I think it's just a comfort thing (or maybe he's lazy, i don't know).

Also do you think it would be fair to make him give it up now that we have a new baby in the house???  He dosne't ever act jelous but im sure there's a little going on.  Thanks!

  • Never thought about taking it away....I think its more of a convenience for the Mom then anything else...Why do you want him to not use it?

ok well he takes it with milk when he goes to bed.  i know i know bad mom of the year award.  i really just want to stop that.  we have tried putting less and less milk and that worked so then we tired putting water and he freaked out.  he such a monster when it comes to bed time. a huge battle every night that we just give in and let him have it so he'll sleep.

  • Ditto PP I never thought of taking it away.  It's a lot more convenient to give him a sippy and let him walk around with it instead of having him just sit at the table (which he would never do).

He'll eventually want to stop using the sippy.  I wouldn't worry about a specific age to take it away.

Oh! So you just want to eliminate the bed time part?? Thats prob a cold turkey issue...Make bedtime routine that DOESNT involve a drink and stick to that.  You will prob have a few tearful nites but Im sure after a few days itll be over :)  DO you have a routine now?   Our DD is younger than yours in still in her crib but I do dinner, little play time (while I clean up dinner), bath, book in the rocking chair (or your case maybe in his bed) and then lights out. GL!
