2nd Trimester

C/S and Tummy Tucks

So one of my coworkers just said and I quote "You should have a c-section so you can just have a tummy tuck at the same time!"  I just blinked at her, completely speechless and she went on to explain how a lot of OB's now offer to do tummy tucks while they are doing cesarian deliveries as kind of an "added" bonus. As tempting as that offer may be, I don't think I would elect to have a c/s just to get a tummy tuck. Has anyone else heard of this? Would it play a factor in your decision? And I'm thinking maybe I should be offended that she suggested I need a tummy tuck...

Re: C/S and Tummy Tucks

  • What a wacko!  There are so many benefits to the baby to be delivered vaginally.  C sections are surgery and carry certain risks.

I would have one if necessary, but I would never opt for one.

I don't know about a tummy tuck but I did observe a CS where the doctor removed a large lower abdominal tatoo at the patient's request. He removed a pretty large section so I guess the result would be pretty much the same as a TT. However the nurse in the OR told me after that she had been assisting with CS for 20 yrs and had never seen anything like that before.
  • I would be slightly offended... However for me I had been making the joke all along that should I NEED another c-section and as this is my last child I would ask to have a tuck done because they would be in the neighborhood to do so. I don't think I was actually serious about it, I don't see it as an "added bonus" either as the baby is prize enough but I think your co-worker is out of line and electing to have a major surgery done is ridiculous! Surgeries are no picnic (Especially the c-section!)
  • Confession...I have joked with DH about if I were to medically require a c/s...it would be quite fine for me for them to take away any unnecessary fat along with getting the LO out safely. Although I doubt this would be a realistic option through the NHS, I think I intended it moreso for the humour factor.
  • i made that joke during my lat csection (as i am sure everyone does).

i really dont think they do tummy tucks during csections. also, electing to have a csection is crazy to me. its major surgery and if i had the option, i would have vaginally delivered both of my babies.

  • I'm fairly sure most doctors will tell you it's medically unwise to perform a tummy tuck and c/s combo.

Bobcat: There is no way the NHS would be down with that :)

I would be skeptical of any doctor that said they would perform a tummy tuck at the same time as a c-section.  That is really dangerous according to my doctor (we were joking around about it).  I wouldn't imagine that too many real doctors would take that risk.
