How to prep Gdiaper cloth inserts

I have decided to go the g diaper route with the little one. Since this is my first baby and cloth is totally new to me I was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers as to how to go about prepping the inserts. I know you have to wash them a ton to get them to be absorbant but how many times is a ton? And what should I be washing them with? Also when they are dirty what type of laundry detergent works best and won't strip them? Thanks so much for any help!! This new baby thing is so complicated and none of my friends use cloth which makes it even more difficult!
