Pregnant after 35

Can someone please

give me the lowdown on the amnio procedure?  I feel like we all completed dissected the HSG on the TTC board, but now I need someone to do the same about the amnio.  I certainly understand that emotionally, waiting for the results has to be the worst.  But I need to know about the actual, physical procedure because I am really scared!  The idea of sticking a giant needle in through my belly freaks me out, and I want to be as calm as possible.  I don't want to inadvertantly jump or squirm and hurt my baby!

TIA.  I feel really silly asking this as I did go through IUIs and IVF with lots of needles and have blood draws for my thyroid constantly, but I am still needle-phobic!

Re: Can someone please

  • Can't help. Did not/am not having one, but I have read that its not nearly as bad as you think its going to be.  I'd be scared to death too. I'd suggest not looking.

    Good luck!

  • I had my amnio a week ago Wed. after having my NT scan come back with a 1/16 chance for DS

First we met with our genetic counseler to discuss the procedure and answer any questions we had.  Then we had an U/S was conducted.  We signed release forms, and then met with the Dr.  He did another U/S answered & our questions.

My stomach was wiped with an antisceptic then I closed my eyes.  I felt a slight pinch, then a mild cramping, after about a minute the procedure was over and I was given a bandaide, met with the nurse for follow up, went home and rested. My DH watched the procedure and the U/S as it was performed.  The needle did not go near the baby.

I've had no complications and the results came back as a healthy baby girl.

    Good Luck!

  • Pretty much same as PP. I had mine done on a thrus and took fri off of work so I could rest for a couple days. My NT results were 1/35 for Downs...Amnio came back perfect healthy child. Oh and I HIGHLY recommend getting the FISH results if your insurance will pay for it. Basically it does the chromosone count and you get that in 2 days time and then you get the full results in 2 weeks.

Good luck...it really isn't nearly as bad as you make it up to be in your mind...and I REALLY hate needles...

  • It is preceeded by a fairly long u/s.  Then the doc comes into the room, they scan for fetal positioning, find a clear space in the fluid sack, prep your belly and insert long, thin needle.  Don't watch.  Just hold DH's hand and look at him during procedure.  I felt a cramping sensation when the needle pierced my uterus, that's it.  Had it done on a FRI, so rested all weekend.  I felt better laying flat on back than in any other position.

I have to imagine that fertility treatments are worse, but that it strictly conjecture on my part.

  • I HATE needles and I am a big wuss, so I had a lot of anxiety about it too.  It was weird, bc it was all so sterile and serious.  I don't know what I expected, I guess more of a shot type thing.  They draped me like they do for surgery, sterilized the area, and the dr came in in scrubs and sterile.  I wish I hadn't looked at the needle, bc it is freaking huge.  It did hurt, but it wasn't unbearable. I guess I got over it fairly quickly, bc I was fascinated and watched the entire thing on the monitor.  It was really strange to see the baby and the needle so close yet not touching.  Afterward I took the rest of the day off and laid around the house.  I had some cramping, but again, not unbearable.

    Good luck!

  • The procedure is exactly as the others have explained.  No real pain just uncomfortable.  I do have to add that my very interested Daughter grabbed a hold of the tub part twice. We could see her holding it on the ultrasound. This did not hurt her just prolonged the procedure.   Our risk from the blood test had come back 1in 15 for DS but they results show a normal female.

    Good luck!
