Had my baby....and BF ??

My daughter was born 7/20! She spent the first 9 days in the NICU because she was early. (34 1/2 wks). She is very healthy!!

HOWEVER...While in the NICU she started out BF like a pro, she latched on great (my son needed to use a nipple shield) she just wouldnt continuously suck to get milk out. The NICU Dr. told me that when she was all BF she could go home....NO WAY...all BF could take 5 weeks her to get it!!! This is part of their discharge rules, either all breast or bottle fed. So after I was told this, I decided I had to just do whatever I could to get her home faster. I started just pumping and giving EBM in a bottle. I would still put her on to get the extra stimulation though. Now that we are home, Karly can still latch on but it hurts me SOOO bad! Its like she is biting me. I am so frustrated, I feel like BF is ruined for me this time because I was forced to give her bottles. My mom is a lactation consultant, but is out of town this weekend. Any advice???

  • I would try the nipple sheild, maybe LO just got used to the plastic.  Hope it works out for you, don't give up!

  • BFing hurt like HELL the first few weeks (to the point that I cried a few times). It gets better, you just have to keep trying. Good luck!

  • Ditto the nipple shield!?

    ?

How awesome that your mom is an LC!?

  • Are you using lanolin religiously?

  • make sure she opens her mouth really wide to latch on, use lanolin, and BFing hurts even when done properly for the 1st couple weeks. GL!

  • My guess is that she isn't latching. The LC told me that if it felt like she was pinching it was a bad latch. Another clue, look at the shape of your nipple when you pull her off - if it's flattened, the latch is wrong - the nipple should be round when she gets off.

The nipple shield is also not a bad idea.

Best of luck to you and congrats on your new babe!
