QOTD:   Do you have a will?  If not, have you even thought about it?  If you do have one, who did you go through to get it and how much did it cost you?

Stacia:  We have not written a will, but we plan on doing it soon.  We don't have a lawyer (haven't needed one), but we'll probably use the same guy our in-laws use.  Don't know how much it will cost, but with a new family member on the way, it will be worth it!

  • We are just going to do a will through one of the online sites.
  • Loading the player...
  • We've had wills since we got married but we need to update to include the baby. We still need to settle on a guardian, which we haven't totally solidified yet.?

BTW, most people without significant or complex assets can do a simple will form you can buy on-line. Most simple wills will pass your assets to your spouse and then your children. You just need to make sure it is state specific and that you follow the instructions. For instance, in Florida, you can't have a handwritten will. ?

EDIT: I also wanted to add that if you leave anything to your child (even as a beneficiary of life insurance), most states will require a guardianship be set up and the court has to approve all expenditures. Something to think about.?

  • Nope....we have never even thought about it...guess we should though....when we do, i will have the lawyer my mom used for her will to draw it up for us.

  • We have a will we made using a will making software program. We borrowed the software from a friend so it only cost us the price of having it notarized.

  • We are redoing ours early next week as it needs completely updated now that we have a house and baby on the way.

  • We will be making out our will with our lawyer before LO arrives.  I want to make sure everything will be thought of / taken care of if god forbid something should happen to either one of us!

  • Yes, both DH and I have wills. We had them done a few years ago, shortly after we were married. We need to get them updated, though.

Another one of the "perks" of the military is that we get free legal services, including wills, powers of attorney, etc. Since DH was required to get a will before he deployed the first time, I figured I'd go ahead and get one, too. Glad I did! We're one step ahead of the game.

  • We are gathering the paperwork for our will as we speak. We've been meaning to do one since we found out, but things hae gotten so busy! We pretty much know everything we want to put in it, but we just need to get it all down and legal. Not sure of the price, but we're going through a friend who is a lawyer.

  • No, we don't have a will, but if something happened to us, we aren't really concerned about any of our possessions, just about who would take care of our child. We've started discussing who would be best to take our son if something happened to us, but we haven't decided yet.
  • Not yet.  Kind of hoping I don't die and if I do I'm not that concerned about material possessions.  I will create one some day, just not ready yet.  I don't even have next week figured out yet.

  • Not yet...been thinking about getting a living will. Doesn't seem as morbid as a regular will and I think it might suit us at this time better...I have to look into it more though and find a lawyer and get some quotes, etc. Good question!
  • Do you have a will?  If not, have you even thought about it?  If you do have one, who did you go through to get it and how much did it cost you?

Yes I have one.  I need to go back through it and change some things.  It cost me nothing.  I got a sample from my lawyer's office and typed it up myself just changing what needed to be changed.  DH's will on the other hand cost us because it specified that in the event of his death, permanent sole custody of his kids from his 1st marriage goes to me not their biological mother who is not allowed contact with them.  I can't remember the exact amount but I want to say it was just under a grand-but there was alot of legal specialties that had to go into that.

  • We have not done a will yet. To be honest, we haven't really thought about it but I'm sure when the baby arrives, we'll work on one. Want to be safe and have everything in order!

  • No will yet... My uncle is an attorney so he will likely do a simple one for us pretty soon.

  • no we don't although it is something we need to do. if for no other reason than the make sure that our children are taken care of and placed where we want them.
  • Will and revocable living trust for us. We may not have much, but I don't want it locked up in probate when our kid may need the $.
  • No, DH and I don't have wills yet.  We are currently working on getting some life insureance set up, so we'll probably do wills next.  I'll probably just ask my parents who they used to do theirs and use the same person.

  • No don't have one and haven't even thought about it.  Guess we should look into it now that we have a L/O on the way.
  • No will set up yet. I am glad you got me thinking about it though. We are also seeking out life insurance policies. No better time then now I suppose.
