I use a little baby fingernail clipper. As long as you are careful, it works great. I occasionally file, but mostly I find it a PITA and DS wiggles too much even when sleepy.

I used a file for the first couple weeks...then I got adventurous with the clippers a little later on. I still have cut DS a few times and made him bleed.
I clip one side but because they are so soft they don't "fly off" and I then just peel it across. You can file, but it's pretty hard to get them short enough. Get a file for thin nails, it worked better. I got them at Target. It's a two pack, light pink.
My ped. said do NOT clip the baby's fingernails for the first month, since they are attached to the finger. She said it is painful to cut them since you are cutting on open nerve endings.
The options she gave me were to: file, peel, or chew (ew) the baby's nails. She said a lot of mom's actually find chewing them is easiest but I think that's gross...I peeled them and it was really easy. Good luck!
