I think you are trying way too hard to find an uncommon name
actually we talked about some other more common names as well- the "unique- ness" isnt a factor...again, I liked the way it sounded and I wanted to see what it sounded like to others...

My dh actually suggested this name when we didn't know what we were having. It's different but like the names Cash, Dash, Piper, or Brooklyn- they work for me. I also like Atticus as an alternative.
Re: What do you thin of Abacus?
Yes, I know.
It's def different, but it's not bad! I think it's cute, and if it fits your style, I say use it!
Well, if you want to name your son after a math device I'd say you picked the right name!
Out of curiosity, are you a career mathematician? If not (and, really, even if) def. nms.
What about Atticus?
My DH is a CPA- but that really didnt enter my mind when I was thinking about this name...I just like the way it sounds
No.
Atticus is tolerable (from To Kill a Mockingbird), but I don't like that one too much either.
WHen I think of a little boy named Abacus I think he'd get teased and made fun of a lot at school.
When I think about an adult named Abacus I just can't see it on a resume and take that name seriously.
If you like the way it sounds, try Atticus instead. Similar idea but not naming your son after a math device.
Hahaha yes.

I agree with this suggestion - it was my first alternative thought, too.
I like the way lots of things sound. That doesn't make them good names.
Asphyxiation, for example, is a word I like because I like the way it sounds. However, it's not a good name for a human being.
Abacus definitely falls into that category.
