Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Has your lo been to the dentist?

I thought I read a while ago somewhere that you should take your lo to the dentist when they are getting their teeth. I have 100% insurance now, so I was thinking of taking her to the dentist when I go.

Have you taken your lo to the dentist?

  • no.  my dad's best friend is our dentist and he said we could wait a bit longer (DJ has 12 teeth).

  • We went already.  Pedi told us we didn't have to go until DS was closer to 2 or 3, but the pediatric dentist that came to talk to our mommy group recommended scheduling the first dentist apt as soon after the first birthday as possible.  It was a good check-up, but definitely a test of our patience as parents (one year old in a dentist office for any length of time is a challenge).  We got a lot of info on the ideal amount of flouride he should be getting and such and she showed us the best way to brush and floss his teeth (yes floss!  but not all kids need to floss, DS's baby teeth are much more crowded than most).  She gaves us some advice on eating/drinking habbits to watch out for and that was pretty much it.  She didn't do any x-rays, though.  All-in-all it wasn't a waste, but it probably could have waited a year with no major consequences...although the info on flouride was helpful..I'm glad we got that sooner than later.

  • My dentist said it is silly to bring them in at a year unless you have any concerns- she recommended 2-3 years.

FYI- most insurance won't cover a first toddler cleaning until closer to 3 years. ??

  • We went at 12mos (8 teeth if that matters) but only because I thought there was an issue. Turns out no issue that they can tell but we'll be going back for a followup at 18mos. I guess since your ins covers the whole thing, there's no harm in it, it was a pretty cool experience for both of us :)
  • Nope - The dr just said to keep up the brushing.  I think most denist around here don't want to see them till they are about 3.
  • Our dentist said age 2-3.

  • I actually just took her yesterday. Her big brother was going for a cleaning so I asked when they like to see LOs and they said "6 months after the first tooth erupts". We went in and they put the bib thing on her (she wasn't to fond of the idea...she hasn't worn bibs for about 9 months) and they gave her small glasses to wear so the light wouldn't be so bright. At first she wouldn't open her mouth but they bribed her with a Spongebob toothbrush and she opened up. We still have 6(!) teeth to get in. When the dentist came in, she had me sit on the edge of the chair with my legs over the side. When then put Rory's bottom on my lap and her head on the dentist's lap. She did great!!! They were so excited to hear that she loves getting her teeth brushed. It was a great first experience.
