Anybody request the steroid shot?

At my last appointment with the peri, there was fluid around Baby A's heart. He said that it could lead to problems with his amniotic fluid levels if it doesn't improve with rest.

My question is, I was thinking of asking my OB to give me the steroid shots. I have not had any signs of PTL, but I guess that problems with the baby's fluid levels could make it necessary to deliver.

Would you request it?

Re: Anybody request the steroid shot?

  • I had them and would again in a heartbeat because I think that's the only reason the girls made it.  That being said, you're about 3 weeks ahead of where I delivered.  I would think the peri would recommend it if he saw a continuation of the fluid levels being a problem. It wouldn't hurt to bring it up the next time you see them, though.
  • It is def. worth talking with your doctor about.

  • It definitely doesn't hurt to ask about them. I got them at 24 1/2wks and delivered at almost 27wks but our situations are different. I'm pretty sure they don't give them after 34wks.
  • the shot really does not do much unless you give birth soon after getting it - so if you are not showing signs of PTL or they don't tihnk they'll be inducing soon - most OBs won't do it.  I asked my own OB about this b/c i had PTL with my DS1 and was worried about it with the twins.

www.keepemcookin.com has good info on the shot and explains it better than I did.

  • My OB requested that I get them at 31 w 3 days as I was dilated at 1 cm, but said that after 32 weeks it's not as effective or something to effect...

  • I'd talk to your peri about it...I know that you can only get it a certain # of times and it's only effective if you give birth within 2 weeks of receiving it...after that it's actually worse for your babies....if you havne't had signs of PTL then he's probably going to say no, you don't need it, but you never know
  • Thanks guys... I will see what they say next week. I have my NST on Tuesday, and an appt with the peri on wednesday to check the fluid issue. I have been resting a lot (DH has taken on all of the household duties) and working from home (bed) 2-3 days a week. Hopefully everything looks good on Tuesday and this won't even be an issue.
