What do you pay for in-home dc?

I might start watching a newborn in a few weeks for a friend, but was wondering what I should charge. TIA!

Re: What do you pay for in-home dc?

  • $3 an hour is typical around here... maybe call around some local in-home daycares and ask how much they charge per child.

IMO I would rather charge a per-hour rate instead of daily or weekly because parents then pick their children up on-time or pay for it.

  • $3?! I was thinking like $5. I am curious to see what others put!  Good point about charging by the hour.  Thanks!

  • I've seen it where it is a lump size either per week or per month...  One lady I looked at was $450 a month for half days.

  • 110 a week including all food and milk.  from 7:20ish till 4:30 or 5:00
  • $30/day - works out to about $3.75 an hour and includes all of DD's food & drinks.

  • Wow! Thanks for the responses!  It gives me some perspective from other moms.  I am still deciding on whether or not to do it. I love babies but I just got out of baby mode with ds who is almost 19 months old. My older ds, who is 3.5 will be in Preschool three days a week.  On the other hand, I am finishing up my college education (doing it online) and that takes a lot of my time at night and on the weekends. We could use the extra income though. I am going to talk with DH some more about it tonight.

The lady who watches DS in her home 3 days a week charges 7.50 an hour.   DS is there from 8-3:30ish(i get there between 3:20 and 3:40 usually)   I pay her until 4 in case I'm running late....I don't want to have to rush there.   Plus once a month, I have a staff meeting and don't get there until 4:30.   So it all evens out.   We provide all his food.

  • I was just going to ask the same question. My friend just asked me to start watch her DS full-time. Normal babysitting I would charge $10-$12 an hour and so I had no clue what to charge or full time in-home care. $3-$5 seems so little.
  • I pay $60/wk for up to 16hr/wk of care which breaks out to $3.75/hr.  My son goes part time (2 afternoons/wk at the moment) but had he gone full time it would have been $120/wk which works out to $3/hr.

ETA: My son goes to a registered in-home daycare.

  • $30/day for 7:30 - 4:30 ~ we provide everything.
  • $150-$200/week seems pretty standard. Yes, it is much less than babysitting at $10-$15/hr, but this is a regular, consistent service, so it's different. Also, most people who offer it are staying home with their kids too, so the money is just extra income while SAH.
