Sorry if to bother, I have posted on other boards, but am really looking for as much advice as I can get...

Hi -

I use prefolds and thirsty covers.  I am having issues with my baby blowing out the sides of his diaper.  Am I folding wrong?  OR is it time to go up to a bigger size in the cloth diaper?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Also has anyone had any issues with the waterproofing not really working after washing the diaper covers?

I don't use prefolds, so I can't really help you there. As for the washing, what is your routine like and what detergent are you using?

I would try a different fold.  We use the angel fold and then we kind of turn in the backs of the legs to get that area a bit more snug.  Works really well for us.  Google it and you should find good pictures of different folds.

The waterproofing?  On the covers?  Never had a problem with that from washing.  Are you sure the cover is fitting correctly?  Is your LO blowing out the cover too?  I'd check to make sure the cover is snug enough around the legs, etc.

For the covers we use warm water, gentle dry and Tide Free.

He is blowing out of the legs of the cover (The white leg band gets all poopy colored)  It does fit right and snug.  The waterproofing is on the covers - the front always soaks through the covers...

We only really have issues with our covers leaking like that if they've been on DS too long and he overwets the diaper.  There's a chance that your pfs might be either just getting overworked, or perhaps they're repelling a bit?  How'd you prep them?  Where'd you get them?  Do you use the Tide for them as well?  I vaugely remember hearing that some people are fine with Tide and others aren't.  How long is your LO in them at a time?

oddly enough I've heard that about thirsties a few times now and it has me worried because I have thirsties which I have not used yet.

we have had leaks with thirsties occasionally for the following reasons:

1. Too old (i think the PUL breaks down over time) This would be after 6 mos of hard use.
2. Too small, and the diaper peeks out the top/front of the cover. 
3. User Error - diaper not tucked in around legs, peeks out and wicks
4. Too long between diaper changes. If the diaper is absolutely saturated, it will eventually leak through the cover
   

Hopefully you can get this resolved!

What size pfs are you using? It looks like from your sig that your baby is pretty big. I think it might be time to move up a size. 

I have no clue on the cover issue, though. That has never happened to us. How often are you changing?

Is it possible that it's not the front of the cover that's leaking but actually leaking from the top of the cover?  That could happen if you don't point the head of the penis down at each change.  Otherwise, no ideas because my Thirsties never leaked.  Maybe you got a bad batch?  You could e-mail their customer service to see if anyone else has reported any issues.

what fold are you using and are you using a snappi?

is it blowing out the sides of the cover, too? If it is coming out of the cover, I'd make sure your cover is the right size or is set tight enough.

When we use prefolds, it's about 50/50 whether he will blow out of the prefold, and it usually depends on how snug and well fit we can get it with the snappi. It's never blown out of the cover, though. But once it blows out of the PF, you have to get a new cover, so it might be an issue as far as the number of covers you have goes. 

I'd just try to get a good fit with the snappi and cover and it should work out. We do the angel wing fold and try to keep it from "unfolding" the "poop pocket" when we bring the sides around to snappi. Hope this helps.

As far as prefolds- I only ever had any luck with the jellyroll fold.  It was the only way I could get the PF to contain the poop.

I would think that maybe the PF is oversaturated and that is causing the leakage... that's the only time I've ever had any issue is when DS has been really soaked...

Thanks for all your help ladies.  I have gathered that I was not folding the diaper properly, which was causing our butt leaks, or so I think.  I watched the youtube videos and will be trying the jelly roll now too. 

I change every 2.5-3 hours unless I hear a poop and then obviously sooner.  I am going to try to change more often to see if that helps.

Love all the help, I definetly didn't know about this board, but will be here more often now!
