Parenting after a Loss

My 5mo old doesn't do anything

He doesn't roll, he hates tummy time, he can't sit at all and I don't think his head control is that great. Maybe I'm being paranoid but I am beginning to worry. I was planning on starting him on solids next month but I don't know if he will be ready now. The pedi just suggested more tummy time and excercises to strengthen his neck muscles and I have seen improvement but I just feel like he isn't where he should be as far as his milestones are concerned. He was almost a month early, I don't know I'm worried.

Re: My 5mo old doesn't do anything

  • T was 2 weeks early and she can't do any of that stuff either, but she does have pretty good head/neck control and she has just started to get better at tummy time. I started to worry too but I think she is jsut doing things on her own terms. I started solids at 4 months and then backed off because she wasn't doing so good and I just started again and she is starting to get the hang of it.

Your LO looks little like T so I wonder if that has something to do with it. T was only 12.5 lbs at her 4m appointment which was acutally like 4m10d.

  • At 5 months my DD didn't do anything either.  She didn't roll at all until the night before her 6 month appointment let alone even sit on her own.  She also hated tummy time and showed no interest at all in being mobile.  She's almost 8 months now and rolls all over the place and can sit on her own for about 30 seconds before tumbling.  She still doesn't love tummy time but will tolerate it a little bit longer.  I think she's going to be one of those kids who never crawls, just starts walking.  Don't worry, your DS will get there, he is just movnig at his own pace.

  • Harris only has decent head control and can "pretend" to sit. He doesn't roll, or even try. I felt like a 5 month old should be a little more than a bump on a log, but other than reach for toys, he pretty much stays where I put him. I guess I'll look back with fondness once he starts taking off around the house.

  • I forget when K rolled, but I know he was slow to do it.  Once he began sitting, though, his motor milestones took off like crazy.  One week after sitting he was crawling, and one week after crawling he was standing.  There's just no telling!

  • A was 6 weeks early..she has just really started doing that stuff in the last few weeks...rolling over is still not happening everytime she tries and while she can hold her head up pretty well, she doesn't always have the best control...she is not close to being able to sit on her own...it is easy to be paranoid, but try not to be...try laying on the floor with him during TT and if you always do it, then switch to your DH...A LOVES to play on the floor with DH so much that she will tolerate whatever position he puts her in...

  • Henry was way behind his sister on a lot of those things too. Then we hit 6 months and it seems like his progress has been astonishing! Right around then he started sleeping better too, and they seem to go hand in hand.My babies are now 7 months and Hope can sit unassisted for several seconds, while Henry is juuuuuust now starting to sit for a second or two before toppling over. 5 months would be REALLY early to sit.

Your little guy is probably fine and just needs some time to figure things out.

  • If he is anything like my kid, one day he will just SUDDENLY be able to do everything. Eve didn't roll, hated tummy time/picking up her head, and was no where close to trying to sit.. Then all of a sudden last week, she started rolling really well, could pick up her head really well.., finally started to bear weight on her arms when on her tummy and tolerate tummy time better.. and since she can bear weight on her arms she can kinda sorta tripod sit (she is still nowhere near sitting unassisted though). Don't worry too much, they all do things at their own pace and change SO quickly!
