Sleep - wwyd?

Having trouble wrapping my head around this sleep thing. There's just so many variables, ya know?

Here's what we're doing now, for naps and nights: When he starts getting sleepy we swaddle him and rock him to sleep (well, it's more like walk around until his eyes droop closed, then rock in a chair for a minimum of 10 minutes, then transfer :).

Here's our goal: Being able to put him down drowsy but awake and unswaddled. I have no clue how to achieve this. We've tried weaning from the swaddle with one arm out, but he's able to roll on his tummy like that.

Which issue would you or did you tackle first: the rocking or the swaddle? Or should we just do it all at once? And would you do it now at 4 months or wait? Thanks for helping a clueless girl out :)

Re: Sleep - wwyd?

  • Can he roll over?  Then tummy sleeping is fine, however if he is swaddled and rolling, not good.  I would unswaddle first then try the rocking next.  I would maybe try not swaddling for naps and see how he does with that first then maybe do the night??  I am not much help ds didn't stay swaddled for long.

  • we still swaddle and have tried twice to get rid of it and she sleeps SO bad, we plan on giving it another try after our vacation next week

  • Well, we broke the swaddle two weeks ago and DS went from getting up once a night to twice so I'm still dealing with that but he was rolling and I didn't want him to get stuck.  I have been nursing to sleep and now we're working on separating that last nursing session from bedtime so instead of books and quiet play, nurse and to bed we're doing the nursing first.  Last night was the first time we did this.  DS cried for a few minutes and then I went in and rubbed his belly and shhshed (didn't pick him up) for less than 5 minutes and he was out.  I'm working on bedtime for now and will tackle the night wakings later.  Naps are still in the swing so I don't know when I'll address that.  I've just bought some sleep books to start reading up but don't plan on doing any true sleep training until closer to 6 months.
