Question for Prius Owners

Any Prius owners out there?  My DH and I are thinking about buying the new 3rd generation Prius. My brother's MIL owns a first gen and her A/C cuts out if she is stopped in traffic. Have you experienced this? If this was the case, then wouldn't it this happen when you are at a stop light?

We rented a Prius 2 years ago in CA but don't recall this happening.

Any quirks we should know about?  TIA!

Re: Question for Prius Owners

  • We have a 2nd generation one (2006) and have never experienced any issue like you're talking about.  The only things that suck are that I have to drive it around for more than 30 minutes ievery 2-3 months if DH is deployed (it only sucks because we usually have the insurance cancelled while he's gone).  And whenever we've been using cruise control and have to break repeatedly, the cruise control sort of stops working... until the next time you restart the car.  And those are really more an inconvenience than problem.  Neither of which would affect a decision for us to get another Prius.  (We actually want a hybrid Camry to replace my Corolla though)

  • We have a Honda hybrid and it does this, but you can override it with the a/c buttons on the car or tap the brakes lightly three times.  I would think that Toyota would do a similar thing.
  • We have 2007 Prius with a crapload of miles on it, and I've never noticed that problem. I'd also think that the revamped AC system on the 3rd gen would stand a good chance of correcting whatever problems might have been there in other versions of the car.

The warning I give everyone thinking about a Prius is that the horn just plain sucks. I lurve that car, but laying on the horn is about as effective as saying "pardon" in a crowded roomfull of noisy drunks. Other than that, it's overall fabulous.

  • Awesome - thanks for answering. I love my current car but it's a coupe and would be difficult to get the baby in and out. I want to find another car to love - and the Prius just fits with our eco-friendly ways.

Now if there are any 3rd gen Prius owners that have the solar panel roof...please let me know if you find the solar panels are worth it. Thank you!

  • We don't have a 3rd gen, but we had a 2nd gen, and loved it.  It got totalled by a garbage truck :( I miss it a lot.  It was great for the kiddo, lots of space and never had any mechanical issues.

We test drove the 3rd gen, and it's pretty sweet.  I'm not too sure about the solar panels because they just kick off the ventilation system to cool the car when parked, so the AC uses less gas when the car is started to cool the cabin... I think it added a substantial amount to the cost of the car, not sure if we'd be willing to get it, just because it's the first version for the Prius... That's what I remember from what they told us...
