High-Risk Pregnancy

Bad news about my pit induction

OB plans to induce at 38 weeks for my PIH, so that it doesnt turn into pre-e at the last minute. We've discussed this, and if i make it that far, it will involve cervadil the night before and pit in the AM.

I had my pre-reg appt today and happened to ask the gal if they offer portable monitors...NOPE!

She said that if you're on pit, you're basically confined to the bed. No tub, shower, birthing ball, walking, etc. I knew I would be closely monitored, but I was hoping to use these techniques to avoid an epidural.

Not totally giving up on on that dream yet. I have 5 weeks to get used to the idea of laboring in the bed only with no drugs. Here's hoping I randomly go into labor before that...but only a couple days before that, lol.

And to top it off, I've had way down low vag cramping for the last half hour. Not the most fun thing I've experienced.

  • Well that's a bummer.  :( I think you'll still do great though. Don't let this shake your confidence. You can still do it.  I really loved the hypnobirthing book. It recommends water for relaxation but then also gives you tons of other techniques that you can use while relaxing in bed. It's a quick read (since you don't have ton of time left.) I think I read it in two nights. Maybe that's an option? Assuming you're not in labor right now with those cramps. Best of luck!!

  • I was induced with my last pregnancy using Pitocin and I was able to be out of my bed, as far as the monitor cords would go.  Granted, this wasn't very far but I was able to sit on the birthing ball and disconnect the cords to go to the bathroom etc.  It didn't make for an easy labor, but I was able to get through it without an epidural like I had wanted.

  • I had pit to augment my labor with DS with no epidural (by choice) - it honestly wasn't that horribly bad.  Even though I wasn't really able to get up and get around - I didn't really want to.  It sounds weird, but I was the most comfortable working through my contrax laying on my back in the bed.  I never expected that AT ALL.  I was able to use other techniques besides positioning and moving around (breathing, relaxation, and visualization) to get me through my labor.

I'll be induced at 38 weeks as well and plan on going the same route (no epi).  Best wishes!

  • If your BP is so high that you will be induced, there is no way they are going to let you do anything except lay in bed. You will need to be in the safest place possible in case anything happens with your BP.

I was induced via Cervadil and pitocin at 32 weeks for pre-eclampsia, and it went off without a hitch. (I was also on magnesium sulfate to keep me from seizing and that is a definite bedrest thing.)

    Good luck!

They will likely make you stay in bed to keep the BP down, since that is the whole reason you are being induced.  Supposedly the epi can help your bp get lower, but I ended up not having it.  Just pitocin and magnesium.
