Confused about storing breastmilk

Hi, I am planning on breastfeeding, but when I return to work, I am going to have to pump and then store it in the freezer.  What do I store it in while it is in the freezer and then what is the best way to warm it up when it is frozen? Thanks!

Re: Confused about storing breastmilk

  • I use the Medela pump and store breastmilk bags to freeze milk.  I pump into the medela bottles and then transfer into the bags what I want to freeze.  Typically I take the bags out of the freezer at night and let them defrost in the refrigerator so that they are ready to go in the morning.   Or if you are in more of a rush, you can run the bag under cool then warm water, or place in a container of warm water.

  • I store milk in Lansinoh freezer bags then defrost in a container with warm (not hot) water.  Only takes about 5 minutes.

  • I have found the lanisoh bags are the best.  Bags in general are more space friendly.  I pumped into bottles poured 2-4oz depending on what my daughter was drinking at the time, then layed them flat to freeze and then put them into zip locks.

Just a tip smaller bags are always better if you dont want waste.  In the begining I would only freeze one or two oz in a bag.

  • Thanks Ladies! This helps a lot!
