SO I am going in tomorrow for a repeat 20 wk. ultrasound (because when I switched Dr.'s they lost my ultrasound report) & I am doing my glucose test. My question is: they never told me to fast or watch what I eat or anything like that for the glucose test.....I'm obviously not planning on eating Oreo's & pancakes for breakfast tomorrow (maybe Wed.
) but should I stay away from fruit, etc? Any additional info would be great I feel so clueless!
Re: Glucose Tolerance test question
My family is prone to gestational diabetes so I have already had 2 of these tests. You do not have to fast for this test. Eat like you normally do and bring a bottle of water. You'll have to drink this painfully sweet drink (I take the lemon-lime option because it tastes like flat Sprite) and then they will take your blood an hour after you finish to see how much your blood sugar has risen above the norm. I say bring regular water because you will really need something to rinse the taste out of your mouth.
I didn't have to fast for the 1-hour test, but I did have to fast for the 3-hour test. I would just avoid anything really sugary. Maybe stick to protein, if possible.
My 1-hour was borderline and I really think my breakfast contributed to it. They don't take your blood at the beginning of the one hour so it seems like anything that's already in your system could go toward your count. (Not sure whether that's really true, but it seemed to be true for me.)
I was told not to fast or eat any differently than I normally would. We wanted to see how my glucose levels reacted to my everyday diet, so I made no changes to my dinner the night before or my bfast and lunch the day of. I passed.?
Also just wanted to say that I wish I would have been allowed to have some water in that hour wait.. even just to get rid of the taste of the orange drink! I wasn't allowed to eat or drink anything once I started the glucola.
