Parenting after a Loss

Naps are getting better - why aren't nights?

She's been napping for 1 1/2 hrs this morning.  I have majorly cut down my outtings so that we can be home for her naps and she seems to be getting a lot more good naps in the day.  So why aren't our nights changing?  She goes down easily and falls asleep on her own, but is still waking 4-6 times.  She usually wants to eat twice, which I'm fine with.  The other times I just have to pick her up for a min and she goes right back to sleep.

I thought good naps = good nights

  • Keep at it.. We are kind of in the same boat.. We had terrible naps for awhile.. but I've been trying to have at least a semi-structure to her nap schedule.. so her naps have been longer.. BUT We had been having bad nights now.. Finally she STTN last night again.. I hope it was not a fluke.

  • I'm sorry!  Hopefully since her naps are getting better than her nights will too soon! DD has always been a good sleeper, but from 4 months to 5 months, she went through a phase where she was up every two hours, every night.  She quickly grew out of that phase though!  GL!
  • DS has been taking great naps for almost 3 mos. Our nights still suck really, really bad.

I'm just happy that he's resting. When he lays down, I do too.

  • I am on the opposite side.  Emma is now STTN but still has that damn 30 min nap interruptor.  I can usually get her back down again but it still stinks that she gets up after 30 min.  I hope that good naps will eventually lead to good nights for you.  It took us awhile to get there so hopefully it wont take you much longer.

Have you tried a "cycle blender"?  Pantley suggests it in No Cry Sleep Solution.  Basically if you know you're LO will wake up after 30 mins, go in at 20-25 and do something (lullaby music, patting, vibration...whatever works) to try and help them go from one sleep cycle to another.  It worked once in a while for us, but most of the time those little eyes would still pop open.  Ultimately we had to start swaddling for naps as well as nights.  I hate that she spend so much time wrapped up like that, but alas it is the only thing that works and she seems pretty happy in it.  She will usually scream out after 30-45 mins of napping, but is asleep by the time I get to her door.

No but sounds like a good idea. I just thought if I got her right when she woke up, she would grow out of it but I guess not.  Maybe I will try this next week.
