Parenting after a Loss

How do you wash your bottle nipples?

We usually wash them with the bottle parts, we hand wash them every day.  I usually put the nipples in the medela sterilization bag after they are washed.  Last time I did that though the nipples had all of this white stuff all over them.  So I wahsed them again and decided to boil them for 3 min, but the white stuff didn't come off.  So I threw them all away.  Do you  just wash them with soap and water?  I don't kknow what happened to them last time and why they turned all white and icky??

Re: How do you wash your bottle nipples?

  • Do you have hard water?  The white stuff is what happens to our parts too if I use the sterilizer bags or boil them.  It's because of our hard water.  I just wash our nipples by hand.

  • I just wash mine by hand.  I put all the bottle parts in a sink full of soapy water that's as hot as I can get it, and let them soak until the water is a comfortable temp for me to put my hands in.
  • Usually I just wash them with soap and water.

  • hmmm...ours go in the dishwasher. Does this make me a bad mom?

The white stuff is probably from hard water. When I boil things to sterilize, I use distilled water or bottled water.

  • I just handwash them with dishsoap and water. I don't think they need to be sterilized past the few few weeks.

No it doesn't make you a bad mom. I would LOVE to be able to wash mine in the dishwasher but for whatever reason, whenever i wash mine in the dishwasher the bottles and nipples all still have a slimy film on it and doesn't seem clean at all.. boo..  So by hand it is.. It SUCKS.

  • Usually I wash them in the dishwasher in the little basket on the top shelf of the dishwasher.  I try to take them out right away and rinse them so they don't get residue dried on them.  I would also boil them to sterilize once every 2-3 weeks or so.

  • I was them by hand each day with hot soapy water, and put them in the dishwasher once or twice a week (I think it sterlizes them). HTH

I do the same, and the basket that I use is made by Munchkin specifically for washing nipples, etc.

When I boil them, I sometimes put white vinegar in the water to get rid of any residue (the Evenflo website recommended this), then rinse them off really well.
