Can you flip them and call him Finnegan Kian?  Has DH warmed up to Finnegan at all?  If you're going to change it, I would change it to something you love.  I don't think that McKian or MacKian will help...it will just take even more explanation.  Or you could just change it to Kiran.  ;-)

As for liking, I'm kind of neutral to Kian but I like the name Kai a lot, especially if you have some connection to the ocean.

It's not like you would be pulling the nickname "Finny" out of thin air if you chose that route--it is his middle name after all.  That way you give him the option of going back to his first name at any point in his life if he chooses.

Or is it only just every adolescent girl  who suddenly wants to go by their middle name, or their full name, or change to a new name like "Simone"???

I think I'd call him Finn. I don't like the Mac being added onto it personally. I think Finnegan is too long but Finn is adorable. I think you should change it. You have posted on here multiple times that you have reservations about his name and I think that says something. There is nothing wrong with deciding his original just didn't suit him and it will make for a great story when he's older- in school for show and tell, a trivia question for his bride to be at her shower, etc.

DH did not like a name I had liked for Aidan.  We both agreed on Aidan (and now I can't imagine him as the other name I liked).  Personally I couldn't name/call my son a name that I know DH did not like.  GL with what ever you decide!

Anyways, one of our dogs is named Phineas (and we call him Finny for short). I think Finny/Finn is super cute for a LO. I would probably legally leave his name as Kian Finnegan, and just call him Finn. Lots of people go by their MN's.

Like Ian, with a K.  Key-un.  From what we found, it seems to be a fairly popular Irish name, usually spelled Cian (which we knew for sure no one here would be able to handle).  My dh is partly Irish, but sometimes I think poor Kian sounds like a leprachaun.  Did anyone notice his hair has a reddish tint, too, sigh?

I wish I had named him Graham.  Griffin.  James.  Thayer.  If only dh had loved any of those.

I actually really like Kian. I think that it is classic sounding but unique.  I do not like MacKian..Sounds too much like a surname to me.. I do of course like Finnegan/Finn/Finney.. and you do too.. So that is the choice I voted for.

As with all things namey, to me nn's are so arbitrary.  I do realize that not everyone would get the Kai from Kian connection, but it makes sense to us, so I'm ok with that, lol.  (We also liked Ty for Thayer, I guess it's just the way our brains work.)  I like that name, my only hangup with it would be that it does sound surfer-ish, and Kian is a chubby little very white boy from Wisconsin, lol.  A surfing leprechaun, oh boy, I'm so sorry, little man.

I voted to leave it and use his middle name.  My DH's family only calls him by his mn and that's fine by him.  He had the option to use whichever one he wanted at school/work/socially.  I didn't like any of the other options, I'm sorry.  Except changing it altogether, which I think is fine to do!  It just doesn't seem that you and your DH will agree haha, so that is why I voted the way I did also.  GL!

I really like Kian....my DS is William and I like the nn Liam but my husband really likes William....If you are going to do a nn, I would do maybe Finn??

As for nicknames not resembling the actual name, don't forget that forever and ever, "Peggy" is the accepted nickname for "Margaret".  And "Jim" for "James", etc...so don't let that talk you out of using Kai if you really like it.

I mean, we call our DS "Bubba," and that doesn't resemble "Evan" at all.

A guy I worked with's name is Kenneth C (something really weird).  At work he goes by K.C. (pronounced like Casey), but to all of his friends he is Newt.  I have no clue where the connection is, but it works for him.  People often have nn that are different from their names.  My brother's name is Charlie, but his given name is Thomas Charles. 

I like Kai or Finn.

My dh's name is John David and he goes by Dave. It's not unusual forvpeople to be called by their middle names. I like Finn. I also like Kia. Would you pronounce it Ki or Kee-a?

I really like Kian - mh goes by his middle name from birth but it has caused us a lot of problems.  He writes just his middle name on stuff so his license is different than his birth cert, than his taxes, work stuff, etc He is such a guy that he puts whatever he feels like so some has first initial middle name, some just middle name, etc.  When we went to get our marriage license this caused a lot of problems so I am a big fan of naming the kid what you intend on calling him.  I like Finn too but I would switch his name if you really never will call him Kian.  

Good luck - I thought naming was definitely one of the hardest things!

I've been pronouncing it "Kai-an" also. Sorry. I think you should do whatever you're MOST comfortable with. Do NOT feel bad if you end up changing his name completely.... so that was my vote only because it seems like you're leaning in that direction. You said you like the name "Mac" as short for something? My bff has a DH who is Irish, so they named their son "Macklin" and call him Mack. So what about that name? Macklin and call him Macklin or Mack or Mac? (as an aside they have REALLY cute nicknames for him like Mack-Attack and Mack-Daddy!). I'm sorry, I know you've been really struggling with this and I hope that whatever you decide to do you find some peace with it. He's SO cute!

I would've voted for Finnegan because I LOVE that name (dh said no), but would just calling him Finn really help the situation since your dh doesn't like it???  So I chose the last option.

Good luck.  We had a really hard time agreeing on a name.  I also think that since it has upset you so much these past few months, changing it altogether wouldn't be so bad.

I voted for change his name.... I don't think it's as uncommon as you think. And he's only 4 months old so you're not too late to change his name to something both you and your dh will be happy with.

If it's making you this upset and your dh has agreed to change his name, I would do it. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I am going to be a total b*tch and say I told you so!  I remember when you were considering the name Kian that you would have a hard time with it (hard to pronounce, spell, he would have a rough time with it as a child, etc.).  I personally think Finn is super cute, but only if your DH likes it too.

Naming a whole person is alot of pressure, isn't it?  We struggled with Stella's name up until the last minute!

I actually think Finnegan Kian is cute.  The Mac names don't quite seem to work for me, I don't know why.

I do think Kai is a cute name as well.

I don't know what to tell you, definitely a big dilemma that needs to be resolved sooner rather than later.

I love the name Kian!  My DH's middle name is Marcus and he goes by Mark, so you could always leave it and call him Finn or Finney.

personally, i think you need to do what is going to make you happy in thelong run - if you dont like his name, then i would change it.

It would be hard for me to ever consider changing DD's name, even if I was having the same reservations that you are. His middle name is Finnegan, so he could go by that or have a nickname from that.

I know you've struggled with his name, and I think you should change his name so something you like better.  I like that adding the "Mac" only changes his name slightly, especially since you liked the "Mac-something" names.  The more I think about it, the more I like MacKian, and truthfully, I was only lukewarm on the name Kian to start with.

My second choice on this would be to call him Finn, after his nickname, if you decide not to change his name at all.

I'd say start using Finnegan/Finn as his name. It's not so unusual for someone to go by their middle name. Then you don't have to change anything. McKian sounds even worse and you'd have more explaining to do.

Another idea - what if you just dropped the "K" in Kian and renamed him Ian?  Same kind of sound, but maybe you'd like it better?
