When your DC eats exclusively (or almost exclusively) BM - whether bottle-fed, breast-fed or some combination.
For instance, I say that I EBF, but DC did get one bottle of formula a day, at night. And on weekends when DH took him so I could sleep in a bit he would feed him a bottle of EBM. But with those exceptions, I BF.
I have always thought of exclusive breast feeding as just that. Feeding only from the breast, not another source like a bottle or solids. For instance M has never taken a bottle, so she was ebf. She takes solids now so she's not exclusively fed from the breast. She's also fed from another source.
IMO it is either, but there are some people who would say it is only the breast.
This. Some breastfeeding "experts" like Jack Newman MD consider pumping and feeding BM in a bottle a distant second to nursing. And most of the studies pertaining to BF are done with people primarily nursing, not pumping. I found this all pretty shocking when I had to EP. I thought I was EBFing, but according to some people, I wasn't.
And actually I should probably remove my badge since he's eating solids.
As far as the studies Sueball mentions, they believe there's a fluid exchange from baby to mom through the breast. And that is what helps to tailor the breast milk to the baby.

Re: What constitutes EBF?
Ditto this.
I would think this also.
This is what I've always thought too.
me too.

A
yep
I got the impression from here that it was just from the breast. That's one reason I don't ever say I EBF but I guess I'm wrong.

Just my opinion though.
