Can anyone recommend a dependable (Amercian) car?

MH's truck is on its last leg. This is only a work car and he will drive this one into the ground, too.

Can someone recommend something that gets good gas mileage (he literally drives a TON for work) and is dependable? His current truck has lasted over 160k miles! I don't think we will get a truck again bc the gas mileage isn't that good and it sucks in the snow.

We will be buying something used, so it doesn't matter if they don't make it anymore.

ETA: Because of work, it has to be American made. I know lots of foreign brands that would do the trick

We've had good luck with our grand am/grand prix's.  You can probably get one for a good price now.

My dad drives a Ford Focus and has had really good luck with it. It gets great gas mileage - he drives around 100 miles round trip to work. He's had it about 3 years and it has nearly 150k miles on it.

edit: We drive a Ford 500 (now the Taurus) and like it a lot. Roomy and it gets OK gas mileage and handles great in the snow.

It's super old, but my 99 saturn was a great car. We bought it new and my dad is still driving it. No major issues, and it survived my less than stellar maintenance schedule. Mpg of 28 city, 35 hwy. I miss that car.

My husband owns a Chevrolet Impala and he gets great gas mileage.  He drives a lot of highway miles.

My SIL's vehicle is a Grand Am (2002 I think) and has over 180,000 miles.  It has never had to have any major repairs and still looks good.  Mileage is good too.  I drive a Saturn and have been happy with it...but it is only a little over a year old.  My DD used to have a Monte Carlo and loved it...but it was only a 2 door.  My DS has a 96 4-door Cavalier and probably has about 80,000 on it.  It is still in good condition, runs great, has never had anything major wrong with it and has always been outside (no garage).  BTW...we live in Michigan.  None of our vehicles have had previous owners.
