Another decoupage question...

I bought the Splash bedding for LO, and wall letters.  I was going to paint them with the same pattern in the bedding, but DD wants to help, and its kinda complicated for an 8 yr old.  I thought that I would get a color copy of the fabric and decoupage them so she could do it w/ me. 

Question, do I have to cut the paper in the shape of the letter before putting the glue on it?  If not, how do I clean up the edges?
