I'm not 100% sure I'm on the right local board, but I thought I'd ask - we are from NJ and DH and I are planning a short getaway for our anniversary. We are going to the Tarrytown area and are wondering if it's a 1-night trip or a 2-night trip. We were planning on 1 night, we aren't really hiking/nature people & will probably just tour some mansions & historical buildings, have a nice dinner, and maybe catch up on some sleep!
Thanks for any suggestions you may have :-)
Re: NBR: Tarrytown area?
You could probably see much of what you are interested in in an overnight trip, but you might also want to spend a few hours on the west side of the Tappan Zee Bridge, just across the river from Tarrytown, wandering around Nyack. The downtown area (Main Street and Broadway area) has a lot of great restaurants, art and antique stores, and other shops to check out, and the area around downtown Nyack has a lot of beautiful old Victorian architecture to admire. If you do stop in Nyack, be sure to go to Patissiere Didier Dumas at 163 Main Street in downtown Nyack -- they make fantastic crepes and french pastries.
You definitely can do it in an overnight trip. Try to get to Sunnyside, Washington Irving's home on the Hudson, it's a nice place. If you can afford it, you can eat at the Castle, but it's a bit on the high end side.
I like The Striped Bass, a restaurant down by the train station. It's on the water, with a nice view. You can get a nice dinner there. It's a relaxed atmosphere. Also, if you go late enough you can catch some live music.
Oh and IMO, a MUST see, is Rockwood park. Go up to Phelps Hospital and head to the back that's where the parking and park trails have access. GREAT views. Lovely trails. LOVE IT. It's by far one of my favorite places in the county. Also, if you're a fan of the movie "Super Troopers". Route 117 is where many of the car scenes were filmed. The Roosevelt state park is on Route 117 as well.
Tarrytown offers antiques and great restaurants just like Nyack, but with better parking, IMNSHO. Can you tell I'm from the area? LOL
