had OB check-up today...effacement question

He said today I was 75% effaced...but not dilated at all.

Does this mean anything as far as when the babies will plan to arrive?  He didn't seem to think so...but I'm curious what others on here have experienced.

Also, I totally forgot to ask his input on getting facial this late in the game.  As long as I don't use any weird chemicals, it'd be ok, right?  I'd opt for something very gentle as my skin is kind of wacky right now anyway.

Thanks!

  • No clue about the facial.  I'd give a call back and ask the nurse.

I was effaced for a few weeks and never did go into labor on my own, I had to be induced.  I also was dilated 1-2 cm at the time.  There's always a chance they will come soon and there's a chance you'll make it to the end.  Hopefully they can hold out for another month.  Good luck!

  • With my second I was dilating and effacing slowly for WEEKS!!  At first it was 1-2 cm and 50-60%, and about 3 or 4 weeks later I was 4-5 cm and 90% effaced.  That's how I entered the hospital to have my water broken : )

Toward the end, I kept hearing how "soft" my cervix was, which is a good indicator that things are ready.  Once my water was broken I progressed very quickly.  Luckily the nurse had a feeling I would and prepared the instruments and the room... because the doctor didn't even make it in the room for the birth!

  • Thanks!  Yeah, I don't know how long I've been effaced or any of that...at all my other checks, my OB told me everything was great and I loved hearing that so I honestly didn't ask for details.  I knew he'd say something if it seemed they were coming any time soon, but I wanted details yesterday.

I figure as we near the 35 week mark especially and haven't put in our carseats and I haven't packed a bag...I'd ask! :)

I want them to hang out for quite a bit longer...considering my ILs are going on vacation the week after next (and if they were to come then, I'd never hear the end of it...so besides wanting them to stay in longer, I also have selfish reasons).  Although...who plans to be halfway across the country when their DIL is 35w PG with twins and then makes a big deal about how "they better not come"???????  I don't know.
