Taking baby's temperature

Hi I have a few q's I never took my son's temp before and his head feels a bit warm to me.  I a reading the directions for the rectal thermometer and it says only a water soluble jelly?  So do I just use KY?

Also, what position do you do it in?  I read in books and in the instructions to have them on their stomach.  My pediatrician said I can keep him on his back and just lift his legs up (like a diaper change)

 

Thx, I am a bit nervous about hurting him
