maternity pictures

2 questions--one about wardrobe and one about poses...also, would you mind sharing your pics? you can send them to me at alexluvstx at yahoo dot com

1.  i am having maternity pics done this week and need some wardrobe help. we are doing these outside, some in the water.  i don't have any jeans.  i am doing some in my bikini. i will probably do some where i am holding my breasts (no top).  no flames please! i know some ladies don't care for these shots--they are just for me and my hubby!  i have mostly skirts.  is there anything i should avoid? i know solid colors look best in black/white ones. my dh will be in a few--any recommendations for him?

2.  any poses you liked or don't recommend?

thanks ladies!!

Re: maternity pictures

  • Who's photographing you?  I like to kinda wear what I think will look best with the photographer's style - I know that sounds kinda strange but it works.  :)

You are right about the solid colors.  I also really like bright or really bold colors in photos, like deep purple, teal, bright magenta, cranberry, etc. Do you have a really long, flow-y skirt?  That might look pretty with the topless shots.  For the clothed shots, I always think tops that show off your bump the best look the best.  For me, that's usually something pretty fitted.  I don't look great in the empire waist/long a-line type tops.  Most importantly wear what you feel good in!

As for poses, your photog should be able to help you with that.  Natural poses are always best.  I have a couple of early maternity shots on my blog if you want to see a couple of the "poses" I did. :)

she did our engagement pictures and we loved her and the photos! she takes more candid shots which we love.  my dh is comfortable around her, so that is important.

i have 2 flowy skirts...i am going to have to go buy some plain tank tops to go with them (i normally just wear fitted tshirts--not plain though)  i just bought a long flowy super colorful dress that would look good in color shots, too.  fitted up top, but long and loose after the belly.

    how many outfits?

melisa is great, so i'm not too worried. but i want to have some ideas myself, too(ok--some of your ideas lol ! )

    thanks colliejade!

    keep the ideas coming!

  • I would take 3 outfits - the long dress (pretty!! I bought a long romantic looking dress for my photos this week too), the tanks and skirt, and maybe if you have just a more casual skirt or pair of slacks with a tank that should be good!  I also bought a short, jersey knit dress to wear in mine just in case I get tired of the jeans/top or long dress.
  • 1. Bring a couple wardrobe ideas.  I had a white shirt/jeans (with cute shoes), a colored top (to wear with jeans), a colorful dress, and a "tight" black t-shirt/non-maternity jeans (for belly shots).  I pretty much showed Lyndsay what I had and let her play dress-up.  I did a couple wardrobe changes (in the car...fun!), but ended up wearing my dress for most of the pictures.  If you're doing lots of outside shots, try to avoid colors that will blend into the background, otherwise just wear clothes that you're comfortable in!!

    2. You can see my maternity slideshow here.  (I have more if you want to see them...just let me know.)  I pretty much let Lyndsay direct me on how to pose, where to stand, etc.  I've learned through the years that the photog always knows best and the silliest/most awkward pose is usually the one that comes out best.  (The pics of me & the umbrella were so weird to shoot, but I was laughing my ass off = great pictures!)

    Have a great time!!!

your pics look fun! good idea about not blending in with the background lol ! didn't even think of that.

the area i'm doing mine in is semi private and early in the morning...i think i'm just changing outside (unless there is some kids field trip trekking by!).  i like your non preg jean pics, but i know i would sweat too much taking them on and off. bummer, because that's a cute idea.

of course the smiley face is adorable Big Smile
