Hi!
On Friday we found out we were having two little girls. While at the appointment the doctor said there were two abnormal markers/indicators of down syndrome on Baby B. First was a calcifcation in the heart (which he said was not uncommon in any baby) and second was that the umbilical cord only had one artery instead of 2. He said the baby would get enough nutrients and be ok. I was wondering if anyone else had either of these markers. I am NOT going to do an amnio due to the miscarriage risk besides even if she does have Down syndrome I wouldn't change things anyway.
Thanks!
Re: Single artery umbilical cord?
My son had the exact same issues. He had a 2 vessel cord and an echogenic focus on his heart. Everything was fine throughout pregnancy and after. They said if he was a singleton, they would have watched his growth but, since they were already doing that b/c he is a twin, there was nothing extra to do.
My son was smaller than his brother but, the weights were still 8,11 and 8,15 so not really much to worry about
My doc did mention that he wished MFMs would stop mentioning the echogenic focus (unless there were other markers) b.c they just get patients all worried for nothing.
My Baby B has a SUA. He had a fetal echo performed via u/s on his heart last Fri which appeared "normal". The other concern is growth restriction. As of 7/3, his growth is right on target.
SUAs are more common in twin pregnancies than singletons.
My Twin A had a 2 vessel cord and I googled and wished I didn't either. Just like the previous posters, the growth was what was watched closely. Her growth was always on target but when she was born she was about 9 oz smaller than her sister and 3/4 inches shorter. They are now almost 6 months old and there is still a weight difference that runs around a pound. Good thing is that there has been no medical issues concerning the 2 vessel cord.
Best wishes for a happy, healthy twin pregnancy and beyond!!
