Babies: 0 - 3 Months

So.. why is my child grunting/groaning/straining ALL NIGHT LONG?

Last night as soon as we would lay her down she would start grunting and groaning and straining. At first I thought maybe she had to poop, but she didn't and frankly I was afraid of what might come out if she did! She would do this for a bit then fall asleep for about 5 or 10 min and start up again. As I said she did this all. night. long. I think maybe she may have stopped for about a two hour period or so (or I fell asleep and stopped hearing it). Any idea of what is going on? Is this normal behavior for a 3 week old? She doesn't do it every night, but it has happened before and I worry that she doesn't get good sleep because I know I don't!

  • I had a grunter too...just his sleep noises. He grew out of it. It's hard at first to tell the difference between sleep noises ad waking up noises...but it gets easier.

  • DD does this as well.  Apparently it's due to their developing stomach.  It's takes more effort for them to push poop and gas out of their system.
  • DS is doing this also - we think it might be gas, but since he doesn't have issues with gas any other time of day it just may be his "sleep noises", as pp said.  Hopefully he'll get out of it, or DH and I will never get  a good night's sleep!
  • My LO does this too! I hope he grows out of it soon!!
  • DS does the same thing.  It took me a while to figure out he was still sleeping and I should not disturb him until his eyes are open.  He just wiggles and grunts and strains alot when he is laying down.  You'll get used to it.

  • DS #2 used to do that... can't remember when he stopped doing it, but I do remember that swaddling his legs tightly really helped keep him sleeping longer because as he was grunting/groaning his legs were moving around keeping him awake longer.

Good luck!! It does get better... the beginning is the hardest part!

  • DS is in our room and I slept with a pillow over my head for 2 weeks cause he was sooo noisy!

image Alcoholism is not determined by how much you drink or how often, but by negative consequences in your life that do not alter your drinking habits.
  • i called my pedi for this same issue, they said its perfectly normal around 1 mo of age because this is when their systems start to change- its even normal for breastfed babies to go days without pooping.  they advised me that if she seems super uncomfortable to give half an ounce of apple juice with half an ounce of water, then if that doesn't help to give a full ounce of apple juice not watered down.  check with your pedi before doing that though =)  isn't it funny how something so cute can grunt so hard?!
  • Thank goodness it seems to be common. I am so paranoid about everything since my LO had abdominal surgery. The pedi assures me that she is fine, but I am always afraid that is what is making her tummy hurt.
  • We had a grunter as well, and I got on here asking the exactly same questions.  (Even called my pedi Embarrassed)  She said it was completely normal and that was just his sleep sounds.  He grew out of it around 3 month or so though.  Maybe invest in some ear plugs so it alteast drowns it down a little bit, but you can still hear her if she cries. HTH!
  • DS does this all the time.  He's 3 weeks.  Generally he does poop after his grunting-the child can poop up to 10 times a day!

As soon as I dig out our monitors I'm moving him to his room-all his grunting keeps me awake at night!

ditto! We slept so much better when we moved him out of our room! I just kept the monitor LOW so I could only hear crying, not grunting!
