Phil & Ted's or City Mini

I know this topic is posted ad nauseum, but I have a more specific question.  I found a used Phil & Ted's on craiglist.  It is three years old and has all of the extra items (including the second seat).  Just by dumb luck, it is being sold by someone we know.  We are going to take a look at it on Monday and they are asking $250 for it.  I also have found out this evening I could get a City Mini double from Buy Buy Baby for $220 (discounts and gift card).  Now, I don't expect there is anyone out there that owns both of these but WWYD?  Has anyone test driven both and have really strong feelings one way or another?  Which do you feel is the better deal?

TIA!!

Re: Phil & Ted's or City Mini

  • I love my P&T, it is really durable, I use mine daily and I love that it can be a single stroller in a second. So if I only have 1 kid, I am not stuck with a double.
  • I'd try the P&T in a store if I were you. It was on my list until we took one look at it and it got crossed off. When we put DD in the lower seat and buckled her in, she easily reached for the wheels... that's a major safety issue... can you imagine what would happen if I'm jogging or just walking faster??

  • I love mt Phil and Ted's.  There are covers that go iver the bottom wheels and we have used the 2nd seat with my dd on the bottom with no issue.  It folds super easy and pretty small.  One negative is I have no place for my drink, keys, or cell phone.

There are covers that prevent this, let me find a pic of mine. Been jogging with mine for months now.

Don't cha think there would be massive recalls by the CPSC if there were resports of it being a hazard?

Actually, the way the 5 pt harness goes neither can lean forward to even come close to reaching the wheels. Did you strap you child in and adjust the straps so they fit properly???

  • Yep... the covers were on and she was strapped in properly... we even double checked after she reached the wheels. But I do have a large child who is a size of an 18 months old but doesn't understand as much as someone that age so maybe that's our issue.

  • I'd try the P&T out first before you buy it.  We thought we wanted one but when we tested it out it wasn't right for us.  My DH is tall and kept kicking the back of the doubles seat when he pushed the stroller. My DD, who was only 20 mos. when we tested it out, was already too tall for the doubles seat. Plus, the basket was practically useless with the doubles seat on. We decided to get the Bumbleride Indie Twin and really love it.
  • We have the P&Ts and are also getting the City Mini too Embarrassed  They will serve different functions for us. We plan on the City Mini being more of our everyday stroller and the P&Ts will continue to be my walking stroller. Like pp said, I love that the P&Ts is a single in a snap. We will have gotten 19 months of use out of it as single before #2 arrives in Sept. It'll be nice to not always have a double.

Same issue here when we tried it, and my DD was only 15 months at the time.  I had my heart set on the P&T and was so disappointed when it didn't work out.  We ended up getting the City Mini, also at Buy Buy Baby using the 10% off registry completion coupon.  I'm very happy with this stroller.  A cinch to fold, it is much lighter than other doubles, there is plenty of storage space and the seats recline all the way back for DS.  Both kids seem to be very content in it.  If you go with the City Mini, I would recommend getting the snap on cup holder/tray.  Makes things much easier.

  • wow, my dd is 3 1/2 and loves sitting in the doubles seat (my kids are close in wt now).  she was 36" in Jan...   I love the p&t.
my top three picks were P&T, baby jogger city classic (wanted sturdier wheels than the mini for power walks. the mini has small plastic wheels), and the bumbleride indie twin.  indie twin was nice, but very bulky when folded, heavy.  the baby jogger was nice, but wide (we're in nyc, I thought this would be my hands down one and only pick... but dh was set on P&T), there was no question when I had all three lined up. the P&T was our stroller.  dc love it.. they fight over the back seat (we've had it for a year now, we waited until ds was 9 months to buy a double).  I jog with it, walk with it, use it for casual use, no hurt fingers, use it as a single and a double.  I haven't used our old single since we got it.  It's collecting dust.  I use the P&T nearly daily.  LOVE IT.

I agree with others... find them and play with them. that's the only way you will know what works for you.  what"s comfy for you.
