How much does a will cost?

I can't believe we still don't have a will Embarrassed Now that I'm finally starting to look into this, I just have no idea what's typical for costs.  Do you have to go through a lawyer?  Any advice would be appreciated!  You can email me too if you prefer: michelle dot boss at gmail dot com

Thanks!

Re: How much does a will cost?

  • We did ours in Houston.  It was around $400 for wills for both of us (including setting up a trust for Marisa/future children), + power of attorney/living wills.

  • you dont need to use an attorney for a will in texas. im sure you can find some tutorials online that will walk you through it. i have no idea how much it would cost with an attorney though.

you can do medical power of attorney and advance directives very easily yourself. when i worked in hospice, we did them all the time.  just be sure to use two witnesses that are in no way related to you or would benefit from your death in some way (money/gift).

  • Thanks for posting this, I was wondering the same thing.  DH and I were just talking about this two nights ago - talking about who we'd want to raise our children, etc.

  • There's some software that you can purchase that walks you through and builds it for you. I'm not sure what it's called. DH's mom has it, so I can find out if anyone is interested.

  • Before DS was born I asked one of my bosses (an attorney) if sites like Legalzoom.com would do a good job of setting up basic wills and powers of attorney, and he said absolutely.  If you start getting super complicated with multiple trusts, family businesses and directives then you should look into hiring a real live person.

Of course we never got around to doing it before DS was born, so thanks for the reminder. When we looked into legalzoom.com I think you could have a will set up with unlimited changes for less than $100.

  • We used legalzoom.com
There was a special at the time and it cost us around $150.
