Pincushions....

Hi... I wanted to see if you minded giving me your professional opinion about an item of clothing?  I ordered a pair of pants from a seller on Etsy, and when I received them I hated the elastic that she used on the waist.    The elastic is very thin, and seems very  "squeezy" (realize I'm making up a term here).   I gave her my daughter's waist measurements....

My question is:  Are there certain types of elastic that are not as tight/constricting as others?   It seems like other pants with elastic that my DD has are wider, and not as "squeezy".

I want to make sure I'm not being crazy before I contact the seller about the pants (the elastic was not even the main problem with the pants -- long story there)

Thank you if you can help me !

Re: Pincushions....

  • Can I butt in? I also make kids clothes, although I don't really do the volume that Pin does, and my stuff is pretty basic. I can help you with this, though, if she isn't around. :)

So it's thin elastic? Would you say it's like 1/2 inch or smaller? If it's waist elastic I wouldn't use anything less than 7/8 inch. The wider the elastic, the less "squeezy" it'll be.

When she isn't wearing the pants, what's the difference between the pants' waist measurement and your DD's? They should be a little smaller (otherwise they'd slide off), but not TOO much smaller.

She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I use 3/4 of an inch or wider for this reason. Unless I am making  a pair of pants for a newer potty training boy.

I get the squeezy term and hate to use that elastic!

Generally if the listing doesn't say wide waistband then I don't really think that you can "complain" about that but you said there was a whole list of things.

I would recommend contacting the seller and going over it, to make sure she can "fix" the concerns prior to leaving her feedback. Who knows, there may be customers out there that love "squeezy".

The squeezy waist may also be less giving or more giving depending on the brand. If you have given her waist measurements  measure the relaxed waist of the offending pants (across) and then measure it stretched out. Then give her those measurements and also remind her that you requested a certain size.

For instance DD waist is 16.5" relaxed all the way around and the elastic stretches to 24" when I put it down on a tape measure.

Honestly there are sooooooooo many different kinds of elastic that she may not really be used to using it.
