2nd Trimester

giving birth in the middle of a school semester?

Re: giving birth in the middle of a school semester?

  • So lame...sorry!

I am almost done with my bachelors degree and my little girl is due in October. I still plan to take 12 units next semester but dont know how realistic this is.  Anyone else planning to be in school while having the baby?

  • yes, I will be going to school full time (working on my bachelors as well) during the same time the baby is due.  I will be taking a full course load at the University of Phoenix (has five week classes back to back) and an extra class at the community college.
  • I wouldn't recommend doing that hun (sorry). You never know if you'll end up on bedrest, have complications and end up in the hospital longer, etc. Not to mention, do you really want to study for/take finals with a brand new newborn? I'm due Dec. 5th (shortly before Finals would be) so I'm taking off Fall semester. I'm also taking off Spring semester since I don't want to start a semester (which I think starts ~Jan. 15th or so) with a newborn. It'll put me a year behind in school, but I think that is what is best for me and the baby. Just do what you believe is best for you and your baby. GL!
  • My SIL did it...She had her LO on St Patty's day, took off 3 weeks and went back.  She talked to her advisor and profs first tho.  I got my BS a few years ago and took classes with a woman doing the same.  She had 2 kids already, too.  If you're dedicated and strong, I say do it.  I personally wouldn't be able to...I'm too weak. HA

  • I am taking a full load (18 hours). I am so ready to be done with school, I am determined not to get any further behind. I am due October 21 and that is right in the middle, but I think I can handle it. I had a friend that did the samething and she made it out fine.
  • Im also in school and taking a full load. Im due right before finals. I dont know what the end of this pregnancy will bring, but Ive talked to advisors about the situation. They told me to just talk to the professors the first week. Most are more than willing to work with you. ( at least where I am at) I may cut back some in the spring, but as we dont start till the end of jan Idk yet.

I would just talk to your professors and advisors. See what they are willing to do upfront. You really dont wanna waste half a semester to find out that they are unwilling to help ya out

Good luck with school and the baby!

  • I am getting my master's and the baby will be born right at the beginning of my final semester.  Luckily, I am doubling up this summer so I will only have 1 course left for that final semester.

But, during my pregnancy, I will be taking 3 courses (full-time for a grad student) and working full-time so this will be a busy fall!

  • I am also due in Oct and will finish my masters in May 2009. Fortunately I only have to do a year long internship followed with a one hour class and I will be done. I will do my internship full-time until the LO comes then my 8 weeks of maternity leave then part-time with the internship (and I can stay home with him the rest of the time). I only have class every three weeks for only three hours so I don't think it will be to stressful. Just prepare, prepare, prepare!!! Try and get as much of your assignments, reading and etc.... done before the baby gets here. It will be tough but with support from others, you will be fine. Just keep telling yourself you are doing it for the baby:).
  • I'm Due Dec 4th (the Friday before final week).  I'll be taking my last two classes for my teaching certificate.  Then I'll student teach in the spring which will start aound MLK day.  It's going to be a challenge but DH and I have talked about it and he's willing adjust his paternity leave if we need him to.  I am going to talk to my professors at the beginning of the semester and find out what I can do.

I think that you can do it as long as you talk to your profesors about your situation.  Most are understanding.

  • I'll be in school, but am due the beginning of finals week.  I've already spoken to my advisor, and he said that as long as I talk to the professors at the beginning, most will be willing to let me try and finish ahead. If worse comes to worst, I can always take an incomplete and finish up when I can.  Not sure if you'll be able to do that in the middle of a semester though, seems too early.

I wanted to take off the winter quarter (Jan-March), but if I do, I'll end up being an entire year behind, because the organic chemistry course they teach that term is only taught in the winter term. I'd have to wait until NEXT winter to take it.  And since it's a prerequisite for almost all my upper division courses (I'm a science major), I can't do that.  so, I should be able to only take that one course in the winter, and then at the end of march/beginning of April, be able to go back to full time (12 units).

  • Well thank you all for your thoughts and encouragement on this issue. It's a big deal when you are trying to finish, especially since I am doing it to make life easier for my family in the future.  It will be a struggle but like most people have already said, it can be done if you have the will power! Good luck to us all!
