MoMs...questions to ask pedi...

DH and I are meeting with the pediatrician we are most likely using tomorrow.

What twin/multiple-specific questions should we ask?  I've seen the standard list of questions, and actually the office's website answers nearly all of them already - but I'd like to know what's different with brining in 2 babies.  Anything to look out for?

Thanks!

Re: MoMs...questions to ask pedi...

  • My twin specific questions were: whether he sees other twins, if they are born early will he see them immediately or wait until they are out of the NICU, I asked about RSV what we should plan for or tell out visitors about, how will I know in the early days if they are getting enough breast milk, if one gets sick and the other one experiences the same symptoms 2 days later do I have to come back in or will he call in a script.

What impressed me about the one I chose is that he had prepared answers for me that I hadn't thought of.

Specifically, he talked about the fact that he always tries to prevent an ER trip no matter when I call, he gives out his home number, he introduced me to the other ped that will see our kids if he is not around. He asked if they share a placenta/sac and was aware of the diminished risk associated with a "fraternal presentation." He explained health outcomes if they are born at 32/34/36 weeks.

  • My main concern was if they would see them both at the same time - some dr's only want to see one baby at a time.  Also, we started w/ on pedi in the practice but through well visits and sick visits, found another dr we liked better.

Also, if you're really concerned about the dr seeing the babies in the hospital, make sure the practice has "rights" in the hospital.  We live in St. Paul and our pedi's office (near our house) doesn't practice in the hospital I delivered (in Minneapolis).  A bit frustrating.

  • I would also ask about scheduling appointments. I have 1 + twins, and my office has always managed to see all of mine together - even for sick visits if that is what I needed. Some offices will limit your scheduling and won't do back to back scheduling.
  • I think scheduling appointments is a good question to ask.  I had never even thought of that and my pedi addressed it.  My boys are preemies so that have weekly weight checks- it makes it so much easier to be able to bring them in at the same time.
