RP When You Pump, what (besides pump) do you need?

What do you need when you pump?

Do you pump in your office? At home? In a bathroom stall, like me?

I have a small pic of DS and a sign that says "privacy please"

What else do you use/have with you? A timer? Something to read?

Something to muffle the sound of the pump?

(I have a friend who used to pump while she drove. How the hell do you do that?)

Re: RP When You Pump, what (besides pump) do you need?

  • I would pump once in my classroom (when the kids were gone) and always had my hooter hider so that my assistant wouldn't be uncomfortable.  Also, I had the medela cleansing wipes to wipe things down when I couldn't get to a sink in a timely manner.

I pumped for six months, 2-3X a day in a disabled bathroom stall. We had an outlet installed in the corner away from the toilet and pulled an old office chair in. My sessions were about 10-20 minutes.  People came in and out of the bathroom for the other stalls while I was there and after the first few times, it was no big deal.

Each day, I brought my pump (Avent), four bottles to pump into with sealing discs and lids, frozen packs in the insulated sleeves to store the milk, a big ziploc bag to hold the horns before and after, a receiving blanket for my lap in case there was a drip or spill (only happened once), and a pack of Medela breast pump wipes to wipe in between.  The wipes were all I used throughout the day and at night, the pump parts would get a good scrubbing in hot soapy water.  The milk was fine in the insulated sleeves in my locker for the day.

I have never pumped while driving but I have pumped while my husband was driving.  Weird on a four lane highway with people passing by....

What do you need when you pump? breast pump, something to pump in e.g bottles or bags (make sure you have several for the day), a way to keep milk cool (are you storing it in the fridge at work? in a cooler? i use the Playtex Baby Fridge to Go), wipes (

I pump in an empty office at work.

A book is great. I take all the baby books that I haven't had time to read e.g. The Milk Memos, Your Baby Week by Week etc. Also something to drink.

Something to muffle the sound of the pump?
    Nope.

I haven't done this, but you would need a Hooter Hider (or something similar), a handsfree pumping bra (some people make their own), battery pack or car adapter for pump, make sure bottles and pump parts are firmly attached while driving.

    Me too.

Also, I decided to get multiple breast shields so I don't have to wash them during the work day.

extra little white valves in case u lose yours or they rip.  you can store your dirty horns in the fridge so you don't have to wash inbetween sessions.  also extra bottles and towels for wiping yourself off and a hand free bra is a must.

  • I worked from home most of the time while I was pumping, so I pumped in my home office, but I did do regular customer/office visits and that's when things got interesting. I pumped just about anywhere I could... pump rooms, offices with doors, cars, bathrooms, hotel rooms, you name it.

Oh yes, and pumping while driving: https://worklifeunbalanced.blogspot.com/2008/04/where-i-pumped-today-fourth-in-series.html Smile

In my pump bag, besides my pump and cooler bag, I always had my manual pump (Medela Harmony) in case it worked out to be easier to use that for a session or two, the Medela quick clean wipes (I used those when I pumped in the car), and a copy of The Milk Memos to read if I had a free hand and nothing else to do. I usually worked on my laptop while pumping, though.

What do you need when you pump? pump, bottles, horns, hair ties (see kellymom.com) medela cooler & ice pack

Do you pump in your office? At home? In a bathroom stall, like me? I work at a larger office (1100 ish employees in our building, I think) and we have a "lactation facility" basically it's a room w/ 3 small cubicals that have a desk, power strip and shower curtains you close for privacy. They do provide a hospital grade medela lactina pump, you just have to buy your own attachments. The room has 2 doors. You can't hear the pumps from the outside or anything like that. I use my own PISA even though they provide the hospital grade pumps. I also pump at home at night 1x to get enough for the next day.

I have a small pic of DS and a sign that says "privacy please" I have a picture of DD with me

What else do you use/have with you? A timer? Something to read? There are magazines in the pumping room, I think everyone will contribute one once in a while. I pump at the same time as another mom, we talk about our LOs and about work sometimes. We work in different depts, but are desks are on the same floor of the building.

Something to muffle the sound of the pump? No

(I have a friend who used to pump while she drove. How the hell do you do that?) I do this everyday on the way home. I use the hair tie thing I mentioned above, I set up everything up before I start driving. I have a 45 min drive (one way) once I'm about 15 mins into the way home there is little traffic. I'm on the highway and can set the cruise and I only pump on one side at a time. There's no way I could do both at the same time.

  • I either pump in my husband's office (I share an office with 2 guys) or in the lactation suite.

Other than the pump and bottles, I usually have something to read.  I keep a picture of DD in the pump bag and DH has a picture of her on his desk.

My pump is pretty quiet so I don't worry about the noise.  I keep an eye on the time (using either my watch or cellphone) but I pump until empty, so time is really just to give me a sense of how much longer I have to go.
