Dilemma: Projecting your own taste on baby's room

Does anyone ever worry they are creating a room for themselves and not for the baby?

I have a semi-theme in mind (vintage travel), but I worry it may be too "grown-up" or not interesting to the baby, that I should stick with more kid-friendly decor (not necessarily babyish decor, but something more interesting to a baby).

Does anyone know what I mean? Please share your thoughts!

Re: Dilemma: Projecting your own taste on baby's room

  • Babies don't really have "tastes".  Nurseries are really more for parents than babies anyway, so I'm not too worried about it.  I wanted something that I would enjoy (like a baby cares if there are characters all over the walls or something else, you know?) and then when our son is older and has some things he likes/dislikes we'll redo his room towards his tastes.
  • Well in the end, your taste is going to show through no matter what you do.  I can guarantee you that your baby doesn't care what theme you pick.  Besides, by the time your child develops enough of his/her own tastes to choose a room theme, you'll be re-doing the room to fit the child.  Don't worry so much mama, go with the theme you chose and incorporate baby friendly items and colors!

My son is 3 now and if I let him choose his room theme he would have a new one everyday.  We did a nautical themed room for him when we bought our house and he's perfectly happy with it.

I agree! It's not like your baby is able to tell you how they'd prefer the urban cityscape wall decal over the big tree.  Our guy's room is totally a reflection of my H and me (cool, calming colors that I like and robots/rockets, which my H likes).  I think nurseries are fun b/c it gives people a chance to have some crazy fun with decorating (rockets flying over cribs??).  You can do things out of the norm.

  • Oh, and I think your vintage travel idea sounds great!  We threw around the idea of doing a map theme in our guy's room.

If you wanted to do a nursery that would truly interest your baby, it would have to be all black and white and very graphic at the beginning and then you would be constantly redecorating as your baby travels through development stages.

    So do what you like.

  • Nope...I am doing what I want for the nursery. The baby won't know the difference and considering how much time I'll be in there, I want it to be something I like and find calming. Soon enough the LO will have his/her own opinions on what they want their room to look like. For now, I think it's all about Mama being happy.

  • Nurseries aren't really for babies anyway.  They are for the parents and since you are going to be spending a good chunk of time in there for the next year or two, make it something you enjoy being in.  When they are ready to move to a toddler bed you can ask for some guided input and do a room more related to things they like.
  • Do what you want with the nursery. keep in mind that babies DO LIKE contrasting colors, and interesting things to look at. They don't know the difference between a kids room vs. an adult room. Just as long as it is interesting.
  • We're doing a travel themed nursery as well.  As soon as I got pregnant I purchased some childrens books that were written in the 60's and recently reprinted (This is London, This is Paris, etc, I purchased all the ones of the places we have been too).  I selected a scene from each book and am currently working on painting the scenes on canvases.  I really love this idea, because it is taking something we love and putting a child's perspective on it.
