Flying and checking carseat ?

Did you put your carseat in anything? I'm afraid if I don't, it will arrive beat up and dirty. Sure I can wash the liner later, but DD will still have a 6 hour car ride in it after we land...

Yes, always but it in a bag.  Also, I really recommend if you must check your seat gate check it.  If there is an extra seat available on your flight, they must let you use it for your infant and car seat.  Take your car seat to the gate so you have it if this is the case. Also, they tend to be more careful with gate checked items.  It also will not count as part of your checked luggage amount if you gate check it.

okay!  Thank Goodness!!  I thought all my plans had been foiled!

  • My friend uses a air-travel specific bag that covers your carseat when checking it.  They also have them for strollers.  They sell them at Babies R Us.  I haven't used it myself, but I'm planning on buying it before I travel.  She loves it!

Oh, this is fabulous news! I had no idea... I was really bummed about paying $15 for one suitcase (for the two us and hoping it doesn't weigh over 50 pounds) and then $25 for the 2nd item (car seat).

  • We just flew back from California on Tuesday. We checked both our jogging stroller (in a stroller bag) at the gate and our infant carrier.

Honestly, I meant to get a bag for the car seat but forgot. I brought a garbage bag to put it in on the way there an then ended up not putting it in anything when we flew back. It did not get dirty... thank goodness.

  • I would definitely reccomend bringing the carseat to the gate and checking if you have to.  When we checked in, I asked if the flight was full and the agen told me yes and I was bummed b/c I wanted to bring on her carseat.  When we got to the gate, I asked the gate attendant if I could bring it on she said yes, the flight may not be full and to bring it on and if they have to pull it they will.  There were quite a few empty seats so I was able to keep her in her carseat the entire flight.  It was so much better than having to hold her when she wanted to sleep.  Good Luck!

  • When I flew, I just put the car seat back in its original box and checked it w/ my luggage.  I was traveling alone and had a connection, so I really didn't want to deal with lugging a car seat around the airport.  It arrived safe and clean both times.  Oh, and at least some airlines don't make you pay to check baby items.  I didn't pay for the car seat even though I paid for my bag.  You can find out by checking the airline's website.

  • I am flying next week.  I went to BRU and bought a travel bag for $15.00 It is meant for an umbrella stroller, but I can put the umbrella stroller and car seat in the bag.  So that is what I'm planning on doing.  At first I was going to take the travel system but that stroller is so bulky!
