I know weight gain and showing posts are not appreciated in second tri so I'm hoping I don't offend anyone here.
I am just curious about weight gain in first tri and when you begin to show after reading Dr. Luke's book. She seems to say that at 13 weeks, your uterus is the size of a singleton at 19 weeks. That would mean that we would all have some sort of bump pretty early. Did anyone experience this? She also mentions that you should gain a significant amount of weight in first tri. I'm assuming some other ladies around here had a good amount of m/s and also didn't gain in first tri? I can only handle very small portions of food at a time so eating at much as she says is physically not possible. I don't know if this will get better as I progress into second tri or get worse as the babies grow. Anyone else have this problem?
And while I'm posting.. Does anyone have to pee as soon as they feel the urge? I feel like a heavy pain in my lower abdomen when I need to pee and I can't wait too long to go. I don't think its a sign of any type of bladder/kidney infection because I've had those before and this is different. If you have anything similar, please let me know.
Thanks for being so helpful!
Re: Weight/showing post - sorry if they're not appreciated here
Hi!
I have a ton of belly pics in my blog... i think from 5w until 19w, if you want to take a look.
I have just made it up to my pre-pregnancy weight.... I lost a few pounds early on due to morning sickness, and my appetite has just gotten back to normal. Both my OB and my MFM have said that babies are like parasites - they take what they need from mom, and that I shouldn't be concerned with the specific number of pounds I gain. As long as the babies are measuring appropriately, that's all I need to be worried about.
And having two babies stepping on your bladder makes for peeing every hour here.
Lots of urgency/frequency, but when I go, it's just a small amount. It's frustrating at times!
I actually initially lost weight at first b/c of m/s but the later in the 2nd trim. I've gotten, I've made up for it! The way my dr. put it was "if God intended for women to gain alot in the first trim, he wouldn't have created m/s." Dr. Luke's book is a guideline and I don' think anyone on here has been able to follow exactly her recommendations. You do what you can and those babies will be fine.
I expected to show really early, but all of our bodies are different and carry the babies differently. For awhile it just looked like I had gone to a kegger haha
I guess if I do try to hold my pee, I start feeling more pressure but MY philosophy is Baby A is laying pretty close to my bladder, and the fuller it gets, the more comfy it is for her to be on it LOL
I gained 60 lbs total and always measured about 4 to 5 weeks ahead.
I don't feel like in the beginning I looked like I was carrying twins. My belly really popped just after 20 weeks and around the 30 week mark people started thinking I looked like I was due soon
Most ladies on here will agree to use Dr. Luke's book as suggestion but agree that her eating and weight gain may be difficult for most. I had to start drinking carnation instant breakfast and protein shakes to get more calories because I had a difficult time eating meals as well.
HTH...don't worry about asking questions here...everyone is great!
With My DD I started showing around 16 weeks, where I no longer looked "fat". I was so bloated I was in maternity pants at 8 weeks. I had no m/s and still didn't gain weight until 20 weeks. Gained 24lbs.
With the twins I was in my regular clothes longer until 11-12 weeks, then it was like boom! People at work were starting to notice but I still had not told until 13 weeks. Again I had no m/s (actually had less) but I still did not gain any weight until 18 weeks. Gained 30lbs.
I will say that I started out about 15lbs over though.
I had a tiny bump at 13 weeks. I could see it, my DH could see it, and a couple of my coworkers could see it. But for most people, it wasn't visible at that point. By 17 weeks, though, there was no denying it. Everyone could tell at that point.
I didn't really get m/s and I STILL had trouble gaining weight early in pregnancy. My doctor gave me a goal of 5lbs in one month and it just about killed me trying to reach it. I was STUFFING myself all the time. It was gross, and I was saying to my DH how hard it was to gain weight.
Once I got to about 18 or 19 weeks, everything changed. I was starving all the time and I put on 10 lbs one month, 8 the next. Trust me when I say it was no longer hard to gain weight, haha.
At this point I have gained about 32lbs. It's still a bit under Dr. Luke's suggestion for this point in pregnancy, but I feel good about it. Don't stress over weight gain in the 1st tri--when your babes get cranking and start really using resources, you'll be so hungry you won't be able to stop eating. That's when the weight gain will start.
And yes--I pee ALL THE TIME.
You don't have to worry about that over here!!
I didn't find out I was pregnant with my twins until I was in my 21st week. I had no idea and actually didn't look pregnant until I was 17/18 weeks along...maybe a little chubby...but not 4 months pregnant with twins. Around that time, I popped. I woke up one morning with a big ole pregnant tummy. You will be fine. Eat what you want, when you want it. Don't put yourself on limitations. You know your body the best. Yes, the book is a guide. Let it be just that.
As far as the pee thing, I would get checked out. UTI's don't present the same way during pregnancy.
I'm 15w and I think I'm showing pretty well, but haven't gotten any comments. IMO, I've had quiet a belly for a couple of weeks. At my 12w appt, I asked my OB how high my uterus was and he said it was about to my belly button (so around 19w/20w). I didn't gain much if any at all in the first tri. My OB's scale says I lost weight, but my first weigh in was in the afternoon (so after eating all day) and my most current was at 8:30 in the morning (so I had about 1/2 of a BK breakfast sandwich). I know everyone recommends Dr. Luke's book, and I might get it at some point, but I'm not going to go off of what a Dr. who's never seen me before says I should eat/weigh over what my OB says. I see my OB often enough and as long as he's not worried, I'm not worried. I didn't have much m/s, just a week or so of nausea and aversions, then I was back to my normal self.
As far as peeing, I definitely have to go more now (vs pre-pg or even 1st pg when my urination didn't really increase at all), but I can still hold it for quite a while, but my nickname from my grandpa used to be "kidneys" because I rarely needed to use the bathroom.
I only "showed" to my DH around 13 weeks...it wasn't until a few weeks later that I had public comments. I started out underweight, so I too was very nervous (esp. after reading Dr. Luke) that my first tri weight wasn't ok...BUT I feel I've gained a sufficient amount to date (it started coming on a lot quicker in this 2nd tri, for sure!!) and my peri keeps reassuring me that the girls are measuring/growing right on track.
I found that breaking up my meals/food was easier to "sneak in" some more weight--for ex., I will eat breakfast, then 2-3 hours later, have like a "mini-meal," then have lunch, then have another mini-meal (like yogurt parfait and fruit or a 1/2 sandwich and soup, etc.), then later on dinner, and then sometimes a before bed snack if I am still able to eat more. Sounds like a lot, but honestly, eating in small increments ALL day is what is working best for me. Like other posts, you may want to try to do nutritional drinks/bars to up your calories until you are able to eat bigger quantities/don't feel sick doing so--Do what works for YOU!! GL!
I'm an odd one . . . I only gained 19lbs total in my pregnancy (I was super sick & couldn't eat much . .. but both babies were over 4lbs born 8 weeks early!). I was put out on strict bedrest at 24w and there were people at my work who didn't even know I was pregnant (I'm 5'7, 170lbs, so "average" I guess). Anyhoo I didn't start showing or really wearing maternity clothes until 18 - 20 weeks . . . although I had just lost a bunch of weight right before my BFP so I was able to squeese into some of my "bigger" clothes for a long time.
As for the pee thing . . . . yes, but I will urge you to err on the side of caution. I have a tiny bladder and had to pee all the time before I got preg!
But I ended up with a really bad UTI towards the end of my pregnancy and that is what sent me into labor. I had been through a million billion UTI's before pregnancy and what I experienced while pregnant was nothing like before -- really I was just going to the bathroom all of the time. I had really bad cramps / pain too, which I never had with a UTI b/f ( and I though they were just contractions). So you may want to mention it to your dr just to be safe.
At 13 weeks DH and I could see I was pregnant but strangers could not tell. I was also a little bloated from just finishing progesterone supplements. I never had m/s and I'd gained about 10 pounds at that point. It was also right after the holidays.
I wouldn't worry too much about weight - it seems to vary a lot from woman to woman. I heard one suggested thing that was easy to remember, which was to try to gain 24 lbs by 24 weeks. I did so and was pleased. The reason given for gaining early is that as the weeks go on, your stomach starts getting squished so you can eat less. Although, I'm at 32 weeks and haven't experienced that yet. I also haven't experienced the ravenous hunger that others do. I just eat pretty much like normal except a lot more and I let myself eat things I normally wouldn't. Like, for lunch I had one of those store-bought pizzas that you heat in the oven. It had like 600 calories - normally I would never eat that for lunch but now i'm like, go for it!
As for peeing, I went through a phase when I was about as far along as you were, where I felt like I had to pee urgently ALL the time. I would stand up from going to the potty and -- yup, had to pee again! Of course, half the time it would be 2 drops. Thankfully, that stage only lasted a week or two. And i did not have any kind of infection, just the babies pushing my bladder I guess. One of the many joys of pregnancy!
