6 wks - twins but only 1 heartbeat

At 6 wks the u/s showed twins but only 1 heartbeat.  The doctor said it could go either way.  He stated the heartbeat may not have started in the 2nd twin or the u/s wasn't picking it up.  Anyone else have this happen at their 6wk u/s?  If so, what was the outcome?  TIA!  Katie

  • I'll be thinking about you and your family. ?Hopefully all will be okay.?
  • At 5 weeks I had saw one baby on the U/S, but at 6 weeks there were two.  Only one (the one that had been there previously) had a heartbeat.  By 7 weeks they were both there and by 8 weeks they were both very strong.  They are both still going at 17 1/2 weeks!  Good luck!

  • We were told that at 6 weeks is when the heart starts beating; at 6w2d we could only see one heartbeat, it wasn't until our next appointment that we could see both heartbeats.

  • This happened to us too....during our 6 week u/s we only saw one heartbeat but two sacs. The doctor told us to expect that the other one wouldn't make it. We then went the week later and there were two strong heartbeats and we've been doing great ever since. You never know...and neither do the doctors - its all up to nature! Good luck!
  • GL!  When I had my first u/s at 6week)days, the RE's office told me there was only a 50/50 chance that I would see a heartbeat because it was so early.
  • We had the same thing happen.  At 6 weeks there were 2 sacs but only one fetal pole and heartbeat.  The 2nd sac was smaller and looked empty and the Dr. told us it was probably not viable.  Still saw no h/b in the second sac at 7 weeks, but 3 days later I has some spotting and went back in for yet another u/s to make sure Baby A was okay - and suddenly there was Baby B, catching up in size and with a beautiful heartbeat.  It is very early days and anything can happen - good luck!
