How necessary is a humidifier?

Do I need one right away? And do you recommend the ones that use Vicks or the ones that just use water?

We aren't using one, but we live in the deep South where humidity levels are very high in the summer.  We will probably start using one around October.

We're using a humidifier as a "white noise" machine for our room.  LO is sleeping in her pack 'n play next to the bed during the night, and makes tons of small noises that distract me while she sleeps.  The humidifier noise drowns those out, but isn't noisy enough for when she starts actually fussing.
