2nd Trimester

dog+fireworks=ugh

Soooo, its lovely living in a non incorporated area of the boonies that people are shooting off fireworks all night already!  My poor dog, he's 16 months, and he thinks that every time a firework goes off, someone is knocking on the door and all the hair stands up on his back and he starts whining and barking and running up and down the hall like crazy!  Then he comes and sits by me whimpering until the next one goes off!

I love the 4th of July but my ears and my poor dog don't know how much celebrating we can handle!!!

  • Mine gets scared and pees.  It will be an eventful 4th of July.  We are going to be out of town to visit our families and are going to try to hang out in the basement where is won't be as loud.  I may also give her a little bendryl to chill her out.  Poor baby!

  • Yuck!  Sorry you're dealing with that.  We used to live in an apartment, and my dog would growl at every single noise he heard, so I can't imagine how he would be if sounds that loud were going off around us!
  • Oh man. Keep the pup inside! Last year my dog dug out of the yard and sent me off on a panicky 2 hour hunt to find him. He was so relieved when he ran to me. Then my poor boy passed out from his "exhaustion" the moment he got back in the house.
  • that's my puppy too. Sad Even thunder puts him in a tizzy. I'm not really looking forward to the 4th just b/c I don't think his nerves will hold up.

Thunder is a killer for us!  We have to cuddle her under the covers when it storms at night.

  • I work in a pharmacy and you'd be surprised at the amount of xanax and valium they give dogs around the 4th.

My 90lb dog is afraid of mops and brooms, but thank goodness fireworks don't bother him!

  • We have to turn on some music pretty loudly for our dog during fireworks season to drown out the noise...and they're not even supposed to be legal in our area, but people use them anyway.

  • I feel your pain.  Growing up in the country my old St. Bernards used to be gun shy and one time Jean broke a window and hid in my closet 4th of July night.  Hang in there, they run out of fireworks normally by mid-July.

  • You and I must live in the same place. :) My stupid neighbors started last night. My dog and daughter get scared too.  Of course at new years a firework landed in the back yard before I could get her in.  My daughter on the other hand can sleep through a B-52 flying directly over the house but wakes up at the first crack of a firework.  She's a bit better now but used to get really upset by it.

  • Our family dog that passed a few years ago had to be given sedatives from the vet.

My parent's new dog is so bad that the meds didn't work this year, so they're going camping with the dog to get him away from it.  I'd talk to your vet to see what they recommend.
