NBR: celebrities/mortality

Maybe I'm not sensitive enough, but I'm getting tired of hearing "breaking news" with the celebrities dying. I understand they have added to our culture, given people "special" memories, etc..

But, Im tired of seeing posts on FB/myspace and all the news channels regarding this. What is the morbid fascination with the fatality of celebrities?

Anyone paying attention to North Korea? Iran? anything other than MJ?

Maybe it is because I have a). never had a celebrity crush b) have dealt with death personally since I was very young, but I just don't get it anymore..

  • It bugs me, too. However, people often use the following of celebrities and their lives as a form of entertainment/escapism.  Much as many of us do here on the bump. When we are not seeking support, of course. Wink
  • I completely agree with you.  While I am interested when things like this happen, I don't understand how people can let it influence their lives so much.  I have experienced the death of many people, including a very dear friend who was only 21 when he died.  I fail to see how I should get all worked up about Michael Jackson or Billy Mays.  Of course, it is tragic that they died prematurely, but their death doesn't have any impact on my life whatsoever.  I'm with you, I'd rather be hearing more about North Korea - something that could actually influence me.

  • I am right there with you. I would like to watch GMA without hearing the latest on MJ before I hear about our troops starting to pull out of Iraq.
  • I must say the 3 plus days of coverage over MJ is WAY overboard. Announce it, like they did Ed McMahon, maybe have a special on a 1 hour tv show but PLEASE let me turn to one channel without hearing about it everyday for a week!
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I think it's part of society now that we have 24 hour news channels and constant news cycling on news websites.  They are constantly looking for attention grabbing headlines and whatever will get people to read ot watch.  Unfortunately, that tends to compromise the quality and integrity of the journalism b/c it is secondary to ratings.
  • Totally agree.  I think some people enjoy it in a sick sort of way!  All the cause of death speculation is ridiculous, too.  Just report what happened and do a tribute or whatever, but wait until results are in rather than babble on for hours on speculation.

    This.  It's overkill.

  • It bothers me when people say things like "I'm glad I'm not a celebrity right now!" and "Wow! 4 in one week!"

Hello. people die every day. More than 4 a day from various CODs. In America, Africa, Mexico, China, Greenland, etc.  no 'normal' and 'ordinary' every-day people get even 1 minute on the local news stations. All they get is a small paragraph in the Obituary section of the paper and the world moves on.

*sigh* I feel better now after typing that.

Exactly. My mother works in a funeral home. Every day she sees devastated families because of many CODs...
