2nd Trimester

Sad news in my town...

Just after midnight on Sunday morning a car full of 5 sixteen year olds was struck by a drunk driver.  4 instantly died and one is in critical condition.

Such a terrible tragedy, it just makes me already worried for the days when my child will be a young teenager wanting to go out with their friends at night.  I can only imagine a parent up all night worrying....

  • i sterilize surgery equipment so every time something like that comes in in the middle of the night we hear about it. its sad.  i hate it when one of the workers feels like they have to tell methat the patient WILL die. uggg.

  • I am hoping that we will be "Cool enough" parents where our teenager and their friends want to come over and just "hang" at our house instead of driving all around.  I know its merely wishful thinking but a parent can dream right?
Those 16 yr olds are in my prayers...what a tradegy
  • That is awful. I am so sorry.

We have a law in CA that you must have your license for a year to have other teens in the car. For every additional peer in the car w/ a new driver the chances of getting in an accident go up something like 15 %. With 4 teens in the car w/ a 16 year old driver that increases their risk of being killed in an accident by 60%. We have seen a dramatic decrease in teen deaths from car accidents since passing this law. I am in NO WAY placing blame on your teen drivers. They are young and their ability to avoid accidents is no where near that of an experienced driver. I don't even know if that accident was avoidable but only 5-10% of accidents are totally unavoidable.

My point is - If there is a law like that up for being passed where you are I would write a letter to your rep. Also - Join MADD. I am a member.

  • That's awful!  I've had a hard time picturing those teenage years.  There's a school district near us that has a student death by vehicle accident every single year.  It's awful.  I can't imagine how awful it would be to lose a child.  That is just so backwards to me, but it happens.  I'm going to be praying for your town and their families.
